Burning oil smell when towing trailer

I use my 03' as a work vehicle and tow a 10ft. enclosed cargo trailer. I is probably about 3000lbs. I sometimes notice there is a burning oil smell from the back end of the car. I have opened the hood to see if it is coming from the engine but it is not. It seems like it is coming form the back? Is there anything under the car that could be burning oil like this?

are you completley sure it's a burning oil smell? Most likely it would be a sulfur smell, we tow a 5,000# boat and smell it, BTW i have a V6. What engine do you have?

No it is not the sulfur smell. It is defianlty an oil burning smell. I notice it when I get out of the vehicle. Not when going down the road.

Several things come to mind;

1st, check for any oil leaks that might be getting on the exhaust system and burning off (either engine or trans). I would also check the condition of the trans fluid. With the constant additional load, maybe the fluid has started to turn. Maybe time for a trans flush.
