Also, my 16 TRD OR Tacoma has it, as well. Noticed it the first night I brought her home and chuckled because I had the exact same experience with my 14 TEP

Extremely informative forum, very very grateful.
So I passed through here a while back researching the ever present burning smell detected after a steep hill or hard driving. Gathered it was common, harmless, let it be.
...Then one day I greased the propeller shaft back near the rear differential. Took a lot of grease.
The burning rubber smell disappeared.
...Grease that driveshaft!

To completely baffle you guys, my '07 Lexus IS250 has this also. Driver side rear. I've been under that car so many times and have yet to figure it out. Definitely not brakes as I just did them about 5K ago. Car has 130K on it now but I've been smelling this since I bought it with 70K on it. Thought it may be my rear tire "scrubbing" as in the toe is off but I've had numerous alignments and all are good. Then thought it may be grease from a torn boot on the rear cv axle, but no luck there. Who knows and I have given up worrying as I'm in the camp that 60K miles later and nothing is wrong back there, so I just live with it. But man does it smell like burnt rubber every time I get out of my car, and more so when I pull it into the garage with no way to displace the smell. Looking at getting a '14 or '15 T4R so it will be interesting to see if it has the smell also.

So my new 4runner TE is giving off the burnt rubber smell. To me it seems to be coming off the front two tires especially after going a hill etc. I can't see any bushings etc. being burnt off ..is it just the tires or is there something else going on.. Am not allowed to park it in the garage when hot! Any solutions to this as yet.. I saw someone mention greasing the driveshaft but really this to me seems to be the tires -maybe all the Toyotas/Lexuses have this issue?!

Any possibility it's the exhaust running so close to the spare tire? That'd make sense

Now that it has been mentioned I've noticed it too sometimes but never gave it too much though because my 2004 SR5 occasionally smelled the same.
Could it be the actual grease spinning out from the rear u-joints spraying onto the hot exhaust pipe or muffler. I do see splatter marks from grease getting spun out of the yoke and u-joints.
Maybe?
In the end nothing has blown up, disintegrated or fallen apart so far!

The smell on My 15 trail seems to come from the front tires also. Don't have the factory tires on. BFG all-terrains. Not all the time. Smell it when I park in garage. The smell isn't strong enough for me to smell it outside.

Check for undercoating on or around the cat convertor heat shield.
I've never had the issue on my TE but I have heard of a bit of the rubberized undercoating getting on the heat shield (and cat convertors get hotter than Paris Hilton's back seat) of different new vehicles and it will stink to high heaven until it burns off.

Odd Burning smell from Tacoma or 4Runner
I had an 05 Tacoma and now a 12 4Runner. When I romp on the vehicles I'm quite sure its the differential fluids heating up. I change all 3 every 35K with full synthetic for front, rear and transfer case. I will still get the smell when doing some crazy spinning or high speed off roading in 4 wheel drive.
My thought is people that drive their vehicles normal they probable have never changed these diff fluids hence you're getting the smell of burned fluid. I know it's not my tires, breaks and just from the stunts I'm doing it all leads back to the diff fluid just getting hot. Again I'm not concerned because I change all 3 every 35-40K miles.
You may want to do the rear diff mod if your having the fluids changed anyway. I always use mobil 1 synthetic. Best fluid for the price. Amsoil would be my most preferred choice if I was gonna go a long time without changing fluids out. Note: We all know what breaks, tires and regular oil smell like. If its not any of these consider the diffs. Note: Front diff on 4 runner limited was much darker than expected at 38k miles. My mechanic said next time do the fron at about 20k miles. I think if has something to do with the all wheel drive system and the front drive kicking in which obviously could cause more wear. Good luck!

I had this smell for the first couple of months of ownership of my 2016 SR5. It seems to have gone away as I haven't noticed it in several months. I got my 4Runner in March of 2016.

This is what I deduced. I have an uphill driveway with a dog leg and because of the angle, I pause at the start to get over a hump and then give it a little gas to get up there and park. It smells like the tires from a quick uphill spin. I don't notice it if I pull in an park on the flat street instead.
I've got this on my 2014 SR5. My wife actually mentioned the smell the other night as she was removing my son from his car seat on the pass. side. Seems to be no real answer yet. I will investigate in full. Def smells like hot rubber. I have done all my own maintenance, fluids, grease, etc. since day one. i will report back any findings. My guess is exhaust hangers heating up.
