Burning rubber smell

Hi everyone,
Do any of you experienced burning rubber smell at high RPM or going uphill? I believe i had this “problem" since I had the truck. I guess I just wasn’t concerned too much about it.
I was thinking to take my truck to stealer, but I’m out of 36000/3yr warranty. I want to ask you guys for your opinion/advise before i pay @ $110 for vehicle inspection.

Check your serpentine belt--or have it checked. Sounds like it's slipping under load. You could have a bad pulley that's locking up, a belt that's not in alignment, or other possible issues.

Are you smelling it when the rear Window is down? Does it really smell like rubber or more like sulfur? When running high revs, the catalic system on our truck smells bad. Having the rear windows open will bring that smell in since the exhaust goes straight back.

The sulfur smell is "normal" and redirecting the exhaustto the sidewill remedy the smell inside the truck.

I actually never payed attention when it happens, with rear window down or not. I will perform test tomorrow.

The last three trucks I've owned have done this after a long or tough uphill. Nothing really strong but alarming at first. Personally I wouldn't worry too much beyond opening up the hood and sniffing around.

I also have a burring rubber type smell that I can only notice when I park in a parking garage, and walk around the back of my 4nr. I never smell it when I park outside, or in my garage.

Then there is the sulfur smell from the exhaust that can be smelled with windows down, if you are pushing the engine, like driving up hill. I know the sulfur smell is normal, and has been happening since the 4th gens.

Isn't your 4R fairly new? New vehicles will have aromas that older vehicles won't. For what it's worth I've never had a sulfur smell even with the hatch window down while driving. I guess it will happen sooner or later though.

That exactly how mine is, I only smell in the parking garage and not anywhere else, I was thinking maybe it is my 33" tires or brakes, maybe it is hard for them to handle such big tires, but I don't know. As far as sulfur smell has not experience that.

Saw this thread last night so checked this morning when I got to work....turned car off in parking garage and sure enough.....mild burning smell coming from the right rear tire....I have 285 50/20 on XD Addicts.....none of the other tires had the smell......odd

Yea I have about 6000 miles on my SR5, and it is 100% stock. What I really don't understand is why I only smell it in a parking garage, and not my own garage. And it happens every time I park in a parking garage.

Yeah, that's the valet's doing donuts with someone else's vehicles.

Also, there's a possibility some grease is flinging off the slip yoke of the driveshaft. When it does, some of it can conveniently land on the exhaust pipe under the car. This creates a nice burning smell. Never, ever smelled this while the vehicle is in motion. Just after I park it... and even then it's rare.

I often notice it on the highway with cruise on when it accelerates up a hill. Doesn't smell at all around town.

I wounder if this is really what i am experiencing. It happens pretty frequently when I park after driving through a hilly area, or in a parking garage. If I walk around to the rear passenger wheel well, I can hear a fast ticking, almost bubbling sound, which I am assuming is something burning on the exhaust. Hopefully it is just grease from the driveshaft, but it has never been greased, except for at the factory.

Maybe the hilly driving, and the ramps in the parking garage, make the slip yoke move in and out in a way that exposes grease, which is then flung at the exhaust, and burns on that. My new route to work includes a steep windy uphill/downhill road. Now everytime when I park at work I can hear/smell it. Unfortunately I can't really get under my car at that time.

I had same issue when my truck had about same mileage. I wouldn’t worry about it, it’ll disappear. The smell I’m talking about is something else. And I think Okki i answered my question.:thumb3:

Hey guys, I have a 2012 4Runner sr5 and I'm noticing a weird burning smell anytime I am accelerating fairly quickly, going up hills, but especially, when I'm going through the gears in tiptronic mode. The Toyota dealership I bought the vehicle from says it could be a belt or something but didn't really investigate the issue. I've also noticed a faint whining noise that occurs and changes depending on my acceleration. While cruising, no whining noise is present, however, when accelerating its persistent. Could these issues be related to the tranny?? I'm really hoping not..

Any thoughts out there on this? I purchased the extended warranty when I bought the vehicle used last year with 89,000kms. I would really like to pinpoint/diagnose these issues and get the necessary repairs done while i still have coverage.
