The EZ-Pass and SmartTag (the version used in VA) do indeed have a small battery inside. The newer versions are supposed to last about five years, but some of the earlier ones conk out long before that milestone.
I got two of them in 1999 and they both went south after three years. One of my replacement transponders died in less than two more years - ironically - but the other one is going strong.
Oh, BTW, EZ-Pass and SmartTag will now work on each other's network. I took a trip up through MD, NJ and NY and my SmartTag worked flawlessly. It also worked on the US 301 bridge that connects Waldorf, MD to Dahlgren, VA -- and even on the I-78 bridge over the Delaware River.

The downside to the 'convenience' of these toll transponders is that it will make it easier for politicians to force more toll roads upon us. Worse than that, there is a remote possiblity that the government could (mis)use the data to track your movements -- or even to calculate your time between two points with the result being a speeding ticket.
Okay, I may be going out on a limb.....but they already have found ways to obtain data from "black boxes" and GPS networks to do that.

They can track your speed between tolls now. They just choose not to enforce this yet. Once revenues are down a bit, they probably will enforce this.

It is funny, my friend got the exact same ticket in the same place. It must be set up to catch out of towners. He sent a letter back to them with copies of every toll before and after being paid along with the .35. He got a letter back stating that accepted his justification and he owed nothing else.

Pascack valley toll plaza
Everytime I use the GSP I pay all the tolls and slowly drive through the toll booths. I always get notices in the mail accusing me of not paying the tolls. Currently they are claiming that I drove through the Pascack Valley Toll Plaza at 57 mph. This is ridiculous, but I have to pay $ 50.50 or else.

i hated dealing with nj ez pass so much that i got rid of it.
every dam month they would take out $320 from my card, most times
i would have almost $200 left at the end of the month and still
withdraw $320 and not to mention all the fines in the mail :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash::bash::bash::bash::bash:
