Busted radio under warranty might mean i win big.

Hey Guys,

So im in the middle of a pretty interesting situation with my local Toyota dealer and i wanted to get your opinion on all this.

So im sure im not the only person here to experience their factory radio crapping out on them and glitching. But either way, i showed the problem to my local Toyota dealership and they agreed to take care of it under warranty. But out of curiosity i asked the guy how much extra it would cost me if i wanted to upgrade to the Navi system, and the guy rolled his eyes and explained to me how the upgraded audio system for Toyota costs 4,500 F'in dollars!!! He said its really not worth it and i should talk to someone about possibly going aftermarket because the regular orange Toyota radio is 2,500 F'in dollars!!

So this morning i had a talk with the service manager and he said they have a guy that does aftermarket work for them and that they will give him a call about doing an after market radio install in my 2012 SR5. He asked me if there was anything specifically i wanted and i told him that i wanted a big screen with Android Auto on it. So he promised to follow up after he talks to his guy, but i wanted to share my interesting little story with you guys here and see what you all had to think about it all.

HAHA my brother said i should try and work some sliders into the deal too :biggrin1:

Anybody ever experience anything like this??

wait a dealer is offering to pay for an aftermarket upgrade? Or he will work the install on your dime? No brainer if it is the first scenario

my .02. I work in service at a Toyota dealership. When a radio craps out under warranty we order an exchange unit which doesn't cost as much as this guy is telling you. I cant say how much it is but its not $2500 lol. That's the cost if you were to pay for it out of pocket. Im not sure how they are going to try and justify to Toyota that they want them to pay for an aftermarket unit because 1. warranty replaces things with factory parts and 2. they cant warranty aftermarket radios.

But hey if they find a loophole or something then you come out on top.

Man, I wish they would offer me an upgrade. I'm starting to hate this entune unit. Absolutely the worst part on my 5th gen. Unfortunately, I've been too busy to schedule an appointment.

I would definitely take them up on the offer to install an aftermarket stereo.

Not sure if this is in the same boat but I had my dealer put on a viper alarm part of a warranty package but the warranty was through the dealership wasn't through Toyota itself

Very long back story, but Lexus had to replace the nav unit on our IS250. Because of what they did to it, I would not accept anything but factory new parts.

List price is $12,636.84. Dealer cost was still over $9,000. And that was just for the nav. head unit. The full dash with electronics and panels was over $23,000 just for parts.

These things can be crazy expensive for a new unit. A Lexus nav unit is more than twice as expensive as a new long block engine! Really!?!?

Sounds to me like your dealer is going to replace your radio under warranty and then refer you to their vendor for the Nav upgrade with Android Auto (self pay).

If it happens any way other than that, I would be shocked.

You sir, are correct.
They backed out and said they would be happy to replace the factory radio with a new factory radio, but anything outside of that is on me.

Ohhh well.

Anybody want to buy a NIB 4Runner Radio?? 2,000
