Busted top stud on stock tokico shocks!

So.. I had everything disassembled on the front of my T4R Had passenger side shock swapped out with a bilstein 5100, all good. Went to swap the drivers side and the top nut must be REALLY corroded to the top plate cause, as I was trying to break it loose snap! The top part of the stud just broke off! Nut didn't budge. Wonder how I'm gonna remove that?! Any ideas? (pic below) Had to put everything back the way it was, what a waste of time!

I've seen that happen a couple of times. Once saw a Mexican mechanic get it off with a hammer and chisel. That was painful to watch. Since then I've used a dremmel tool and cut it off. Harbor freight sells a dremmel knock off pretty cheap.

Yeah, cutting it is probably what I'll have to do. I didn't have my dremel or my grinder with me at the time.

You might be able to grab the shock inbetween coils with some channel locks and wrench on the bolt that way. Not sure if I'm even in the ball park. Just another idea.

I would take a cutting wheel to the bolt and cut that off

I would probably just cut it off but another option would be to use a pipe wrench on the shock body and a torch to heat up the nut since it obviously is pretty stuck on there. Good luck.

Yeah... I see that with shocks from time to time. Usually what I do is chock them up on a spring compressor, leave some tension on the plate (this is very very critical, you just want a little bit of tension, otherwise it will be very explosive when the bolt comes loose.) and hit it with an impact gun until the nut comes off. The threads will be ruined more than likely, but you're replacing the shock anyways and it should come with a new lock nut.
