Busted windshield

Excuse me while I vent. New '05 4R with less than a thousand miles and already I have a crack crawling up across the passenger side windshield.

Minding my own business coming down the interstate in a section where they have been grinding it away prior to repaving and a guy goes by and kicks up a whole bunch of stones and road crud, probably left over from the contractors doing the grinding. Sure enough I hear the click of a stone on glass and a few miles later, here comes the crack. Just a wonderful way to get me PO'd.

Of course if there is a difference I wonder if anyone will have the new windshields in stock? Repair parts may take a while to get into the supply stream. But a good point. I'd forgotten about the stronger glass for 06 and it is definately worth asking. Thanks for the reminder guys.

I had the same thing happen to my 2004 SR5 driving home from the dealer at 8 miles! Three months later a got another rock star. Both were repaired but the first one let go at a year.

I had an after market Safelite windshield installed. Now it has been on the truck for about ten months. When the sun hits it I can see several pits where rocks have hit but none have star'd like the Toyota OEM windshield! I think they went too far in reducing the weight of the original.

That's one of the questions for me - cost of an original equipment, fragile windshield vs my local PPG dealer for $240 or so. Haven't called my local stealer to see what they want for the fragile one yet. Of course the Toyota has the water shedding glass which really does work quite well. Don't know if I can get that in the aftermarket versions.

A lot of the time, the dealer will go through a glass shop to get the windshield. I went to my local dealership when I was shopping around, and they said they used the local glass shop that I was just at for their windshields..

Would having the newer 06' glass (thicker) create the same amount of pitting as the previous version windshields? I've had 3 busted windshields of late, (2 on my mazda MX6) and one on the 4runner.

I think the aftermarket Safelite glass is thinner and inferior to OEM. Then again, thats just my opinion.

How many of you guys have full glass coverage? I'm glad I do.

glad that they replace your windshield for free in Florida, only replaced it once, but it seems to be crack free

The factory windshield is somehow embedded with the rain shedding properties. It is not an aftermarket application. I like the feature and I think it works. I would get Toyota to get you a new one.

I think I'm going to go check my insurance for windsheid replacement and make sure I have the coverage to get an OEM replacement for a small deductable or free replacement.

I had my windshield crack on me a couple of months ago and I was able to get it replaced completely for free by StateFarm Insuarance. I called my INS and they said that I could pick anyone to do it with a $0 deductible. I asked the coworkers and the consensus was that Safelite does a good job. I called them up and spoke to a tech who said that since my truck was relatively new that it wouldn't be a big deal to get an OEM replacement as long as my INS approved. Well they verified that my INS would and a week later they came out to replace it. They did a good job and it was in fact Toyota glass. The only difference was that it was "Temperlite" instead of the one that came with your 4Runner. It was infact made in Japan though.

See if your INS will replace it for free because it does save a bunch of money. Search for my thread and the exact price is there but I think it was $400+ for the OEM glass and labor.

I have a $500 comp deductible so insurance won't pay for it. Just for fun, here are the quotes on replacement so far:

Toyota stealer - glass only - they send the vehicles out to a local glass replacement shop $394. Labor would be extra.

Windshield World - $175 installed.
Triumph - $180 installed.
PPG - $202.46 installed.

The windshield is not the water repelling glass. That is the side and rear glass and the mirrors only. Apparently the windshield doesn't get the fancy treatment according to the dealer.

So that's what I know so far.

The windshield IS water repellant. I will get out my Toyota University booklet on the 4runner to check and prove if needed.

Nope, don't believe hardly anything they tell me but didn't have anything to refute it in front of me and the Toyota site doesn't help much.

Pull out your TU booklet and let me know what it says.

No need to use your scanner; the factory windshield is hydrophollic (water repelling)! It tells you that in your 4Runner owners manual. As a matter of fact, it tells you not to use petro based products on the windshield, side windows and mirror because of their hydrophollic treatments.
