buy new 4R now or wait for redesign?

Hi all,

I drive 2011 4R, had it since new, 11 years next month.
I had 96 4R before for many years. Love them.

The 2011 is getting old, I could drive it few more years, but I'll have to replace it within 2-3 years. In Ontario, Canada they rust a lot and I have to have reliable vehicle for my long trips into the outdoors.

The question is buy now or wait until redesign which is expected for 2023?

I am quite happy with the current one, the only reason to wait would be better fuel consumption, reportedly they plan 2.4 Turbo and 7-8 speed transmission.
OTOH, most things don't get better with redesigns these days. Some people don't like turbo engines. I plan to keep it for 10 or more years.

What do you think?
BTW, 2 of my neighbors had their 4r and highlander stolen TWICE within the last 2 years. Both had smart keys.
I am thinking of ordering Trail (which I understand has a regular key) for that reason only.

I’d take a good long look at the before and after opinions of the Tacoma now vs the prior generation.

I would think it’s as good a predictor as any opinions around here.

I’m curious if the new Taco has a better interior build quality than before. That’s the real weak point in my 4Runner. I’d take a quirky drivetrain like the Taco has if I could get an interior that isn’t noisy.

So based on what I've heard about the new 2023, looks like it possibly wont be made in Japan anymore. They're getting rid of the 4.0L V6 for a turbo charged 2.4L 4 cylinder and possibly adding a hybrid trim. Depends how important gas mileage and resale value is for you. I'm considering getting the 2022 myself as it will be the last of the Gen 5 and should the 2023 tank or have alot of bugs (alot of toyota first year models tend to have in my experience) then the resale value of the Gen 5 should stay/go up. If you can afford it, what I would do is get the 2022 now, wait and see how the 2023 is received and reviewed. The reason why Toyota never changed anything for the 5th gen is because it was reliable and holds its value. I'm sure the new ones will do well too but hardcore 4runner fans might be turned off by the fact it might be made in the USA and will have a turbo that "could" affect reliability down the road.

Wait until we actually know what the next generation offers to make your decision. No point making the decision now based solely on keyboard warrior conjecture.

We will know what's coming next before your opportunity to buy the existing generation is lost.

This is not likely. COVID pandemic created shortage of many things, 4runners is one of them, esp. Trail trim. As I said, I am speficially interested in Trail due to regular key and no Push Button start. It probably sounds crazy to a lot of people, but looks like I live in the centre of Toyota stealing universe.

One thing you know for sure you'll be getting with the current (gen-5) model, is a vehicle that will last 20 years and go 500,000 miles with basic maintenance.....I'd rather have a bird in the hand, instead of two in the bush! If the gen-6 proves to be a dud, gen-5 stock is going to go way up.

So many people want a 4runner because there is a stigma against minivans/cross overs, but then they complain about mpg, stiff ride, ease of access. Etc. So manufacturers make cars softer. Plus the move to turdbos in gas engines.

If you like the way the 5th gen is now buy it. We're living in the salad days.

There’s going to be a 2021 with 9,000 miles on it in my town tomorrow. Trading on a 2022 off-road Frontier. Just got off the phone.

Mind you gas here today is close to CAD 1.40/L ( you convert it )

Do the math on how many tanks of gas you buy a year and getting 2-3 mpg better. The math is never there unless you change categories.

Salad days is a Shakespeare idiom- carefree and blissful times. 5th gen 4runner, before Toyota, safety nazis, and the EPA destroy the it.

i did my math in comparison to my car. did not make sense so i bought the 4runner.

Do the math on how many tanks of gas you buy a year and getting 2-3 mpg better. The math is never there unless you change categories.

Buy the current Gen 4Runner, even if you absolutely need to have the 6th gen when it’s released the value of the 5th gen will remain high. I bought my 2016 for 42k in late 2016 and it’s still worth 34k according to KBB.

I am already skipping deserts and making my own coffee, but I get the point.

I have a 2022 on order.

I like how in the 5th gen in terms that everything isn't integrated. I don't want things like climate control displays via infotainment screen.

It's a tried and true platform, with huge aftermarket support.

Also, I'm coming from a 2017 Armada. I'm already ahead in fuel economy. :rofl:

Fuel economy is the one complaint I have with my 2021 TRD Pro. I was surprised that the Bronco does not get a huge amount better, so it makes me wonder how much better even a hybrid 4Runner would be. It probably would be much better around town, but who knows. We have a 2013 Lexus RX450h (hybrid) and it gets around 23mpg around town. OK but not great. Ethanol and short drives kill fuel economy.

I usually don't mod cars, but have done quite a few mods to my 4Runner and I am impressed with how spacious and relatively simple the engine bay is. I really like that good old 4L V6.

My 911 is a 3L flat six twin turbo and makes 420hp. I love turbos on that car, but not on a 4Runner.

So I might tend towards getting a 5th Gen if you want a very reliable do anything vehicle. If the 6th gen is too fantastic to resist, then the 5th gen will be a valuable trade-in.

I have a 2022 on order and am glad I pulled the trigger given the rumors about the next Gen. I think Gen 5’s will hold their value as many people will want to have the V6 engine.

I got in touch with a bunch of dealers and 4Runners are hard to get, Trail would be very hard to get, there are not many of them made and allocated.
Some dealers said they get one per year at most.
MSRP, no discount.

Funny thing it's supposed to be 'cheap' model.

I paid 41K CAD 11 years ago, now I am looking at 55K at least. They tell me the inflation is 2%, LOL.

I am digging the new Frontier and once resale on a ‘21 Armada hits low enough, I really might add one.
The Armada is really tempting only offset by having to ever go to a Nissan dealership. That said, now that they seem to he ditching the CVT down the line, maybe it won’t be quite as bad.
