BUY new rims/tire pkg with Micelin X-terrain or just buy Revos?

I'm thinking about getting a spare set of rims & tires (Michelin Cross Terrains) or just buy new Revos for my current sport edition rims.


Pricewise, I'll be paying $800 for the rim/tire combo. If I just get new tires for my current rims, it'll cost me $550. Do, I really need an extra set of rims? BTW, the rims will be GX470 rims. They will look something like these.

If you can get the Revo's for $550 then I would just get those.

Those rims don't look bad but, to me, they are not that great either. I do like the sequoia rims on the 4runner.
 
Raysmd where are you getting revo's for $550. I live in the NYC, so I am not that far from you. It would be worh the drive.:)

With Revos, you really don't need a second set of wheels/tires. They're great on road as well as off road.
 
Had a set of 17" sport wheels I bought for winter tires and just mounted some Nokian SUV winters on the runner. My only gripe is that the tire pressure sensors are between $80-$120 each so I decided that since they are as much as what I paid for the wheels I'd pass on them. So when I put the wheels with the winter tires on the runner I expect the little light will go on and stay on. It's a bit of a PITA but I'll live with the light for the $400+ it would cost to get sensors. I'll watch eBay and eventually I expect they'll start to show up there. I'll have to watch local salvage yards for a late model T4R. Maybe they'll show up there at a more reasonable price.

As far as the tires, I looked at the Blizzaks and the X-Ice but because I've had real good luck with the Nokian that's how we went. Now when we get closer to real snow the Dunflops will come off. I've already tried then in our most recent snow storm and they aren't worth crap in the slippery stuff.
 
With Revos, I don't see why anyone would need dedicated snow tires unless they lived in Alaska.

The sensors are a pain in the ass and you would need to have them reprogrammed into your DME every time you swap wheels. The DME can only hold 5 codes (4 + spare).

I ran my Dunlops up to VT (Killington) last year when it dumped about 16" one night we were there. I was the taxi for that night since no other car that came up could even make it out of the drive way. This was when my 4runner was bone stock. I haven't had a chance to run it now with the lift and bigger tires but I can't imagine having any problems even in the worst storm.

Dunlops get slippery at around 10k to 15k miles on them so I swapped them out at 7k miles. They're great 90% of the time but it's that 10% when you really need the grip that you'll be wishing you had Revos.

When you live here year 'round you find out why you need dedicated snows. It isn't going that is the problem, it's steering and stopping, especially on back roads like where I live (dirt road that doesn't get plowed until the main roads are done). The softer compounds in dedicated snows make for far better stopping/steering on ice and packed snow (what we call ironed on conditions).

On a combination of black ice and slushy snow you need snows for stopping and steering. It is cheap insurance - a small dent in a fender will set you back $500-$600 - the cost of a set of snow tires.

You are right, the TPMS are a PITA. Good idea in theory but in practical application a real pain. You have to keep track of the serial number of each sensor and reprogram the system every time you change tires - which is why I decided not to bother. It's not a bad idea because there are so many dead heads out there that never check tire pressure (I followed one tonight for a mile or so - right rear tire was so low the whole van was tilted way over) that some sort of warning is probably warranted. Or perhaps Darwin was right - we can get rid of some of the surplus population if we just leave things alone.:D
 
sbryan - I understand that winter tires are more for control than acceleration. What I was trying to say was that the 4runner is an extremely capable winter vehicle and with Revos, I really don't see a need for a set of dedicated winter tires. If it was any other vehicle, I would definitely recommend them and I have.

Even with the crappy Dunlops and stock ride height, the 16"+ of snow that fell didn't even faze the 4runner. The only reason I changed to Revos is that from everything I've read, the Dunlops get bad after 10k-15k miles. I had 7k on them when I swapped out.

Tire pressure systems will be mandatory starting '08 (maybe '07) so most manufacturers are starting to put them in thier cars and trucks now.

RaysMD - You *might* be able to move the sensors over to your new wheels. You should be able to use them on the GX rims.
 
To program new TPMS sensors it has to go on a computer. Many tire shops (and the dealer) have the ability to program TPMS.


Some who use two sets of rims do a mod to bypass the TPMS, I think TPMS is great feature and I don't know that I would bypass it unless I was the only driver.


FYI- New LC's/GX570's can accomadate 9 (or 10:confused: ) TPMS sensors to allow for exactly the issue you're discussing. To my knowledge there's no easy answer on a T4R.
