Buying a black car for the desert...

So, I'm about to get myself a '14 TE, hooray! I've been dead set on a Dark Grey one for the longest time, but now - last night before the deal - I suddenly realized how mean-looking the Black would be with the front Plasti-Dipped, sporting flat black nerf bars.

Question is: Am I completely bonkers buying a black car to get onto warm dusty desert roads and through the occasional shrubbery?

How bad of a beating would the black paint take compared to the magnetic grey, really?

I can't sleep. Please help.

You may want to doublecheck, but from what I have heard, the black on the 2010s - 13s was single stage, like the white. They may have changed it for 2014. Grey has clearcoat. For Toyota's generally, flat colors are single stage, and metallic have clear.

So the 2014 black does have metal flakes in it, so maybe it isn't single stage...

Black still looks black when it's dirty. Yeah, if you want nice paint black it's like a second job. Yeah, it shows desert pin stripping more than other colors. Yeah, its a pain. All worth it if when you stand back and admire your rig it's bad ass black. I live on dirt in the desert and bought my black TE for off road. Again, it's still black when it's dirty.

I have one black car and a mag gray 4runner. The mag gray definitely hides dirt much better. I don't know what to tell you about the black besides, don't get it if you're an OCD clean freak, lol.

Personally I don't give a crap, but years ago when I actually cared enough to wash my car, I remember it taking me forever and a day to get the black paint looking clean; and they are impossible to keep clean for longer than a few days.

Black might show pinstripping more too? So that's one thing to consider if you plan to go off-road...

I've got some pretty gnarly pinstripping that I think penetrated though the clear coat on some spots, and you can barely see it from more than 5 ft away on the mag gray.

Congrats on the new purchase, I'm sure you'll end up liking either color, just pick one already, lol.

Thanks, all! I picked the mag grey. Getting the car this Tuesday, now I'm so excited I can't sleep for that reason..
