Has anyone painted their 14+ fender flares black?

Hey all, I am looking to paint my OEM fender flares black with a slight texture. I am looking at the Rustoleum textured plastic paint for this job. At this time I plan to tape off the flares, sand them down lightly, wrap the whole car in plastic and spray. I am also kind of considering doing my door handles but that might over complicate this.

I am curious if anyone has done this before. I see many plasti-dip jobs but I want something with a bit of texture and permanent.

This one is a dip job but it is the look I am trying to achieve on my Magnetic Grey.

Factory quality paint isn't cheap, and I NEVER recommend anyone sand it down to spray rattle can crap over. I'd get this done professionally.

If you're goong to do something permanent like sand+paint and you want texture, you might as well do something like bedliner. I would take the flares off to paint them though.

No paint on my fender flares, but I did wrap them with 3M matte black vinyl. It looks good on my mag gray T4R.

I'd like to see some pics on Grey myself. My vote would be to give Plastidip a try and see if you like it. I just removed some from my 4R to trade it in and although it wasn't too bad to remove I was surprised how tough the stuff was.

I'm not a plastidip fan or at least I am not when it comes to cosmetics. I spent over 40k on my 4Runner so I don't plan on spraying anything on it. I'm not criticizing those that do use it....it's just not my thing.

I've wanted to do this and I think I've decided that I will just buy replacement black flares from Toyota and do like LawnDart or I will have them painted professionally. This way if I ever want to change I can just pop the factory ones back on.

The newer refresh of Gen 5's don't have the removable sections on the bumper corners. I've thought this through and if I decide to move forward with a Pelfrey front bumper one day I won't have that concern on the fronts. On the rear I may just have a 2010-2013 trail bumper put on.

Sorry, I'm sure you can google that on any number of parts websites though. There should be 6 parts total.

I also wrapped the plastic bumper, no point getting an older trail bumper since they'd have to be painted as it comes from the factory in the raw, like the flares.

We did matte black to match the flares with a clear bra over the black matte wrap, if you can spot the difference good on you, because to me it's a dead on match:

I remember asking you about the flares and this was the route you took. The unpainted flares seemed pricey for what they are. At least from what I was able to find on the internet.

Agree, I don't know why Toyota didn't keep the flares black like they did for 10-13' trail models. I did see someone on here who put LINE X on the flares and bumper. Debating doing that or doing a wrap on them.

Line-X also adds considerable weight to each flare, and as a result we found on a test that the clips struggled to hold them on as securely.

Mind giving me a little clarification on the molded in bumper section? I can see replacing the removable sections on top of the wheel wells and replacing them but how did you cover the part that is molded into the rear bumper again?

3m black wrap and then a clear bra over made it look like the black plastic flares.

Agreed. IMO this feature distinguished the TE from the others aesthetically but also serve a "trail" function along with the black side mirrors to endure a bit more punishment. If I got a '14+ it would be the first mod I'd do.

I wouldn't go so far as to buy new ones for that since they are a pro job at that point and should come out great.

I am installing my sliders in about 2 weeks so I want to knock this out while its naked (OEM steps are off now for wheeling). Hopefully the weather is nice this weekend and I will get some dip and have at it. I just hope the stuff lasts a few years. I don't like the idea of doing it again.
