Buying my TRD Pro

My previous car starting giving me a lot of trouble and I was moving to Atlanta in a few weeks so I needed to get a reliable car. I ended up going to a Toyota dealership in Charleston SC "just to look." It was late October of 2014 and the dealership had what I am assuming was their first TRD Pro 4runner in their showroom. Either way the salesman told me they had just got it in. Guy couldn't really tell me much about it so I tried to google "TRD PRO" to find more information about it. There was very little information online at the time but I checked the car over and really like what I saw. It was the biggest impulse purchase I had ever made but after negotiating hard and pretending to walk out more than once....I left paying just over 36.5K cash out the door. At the time I thought I had got a very reasonable deal, but I never imagined how much the demand and price would go up on these. I still absolutely love the vehicle and I have never had buyers remorse. I guess it was just dumb luck to stumble into it at such an early time. I don't think the dealership could have imagined how well the TRD PRO branding would turn out to be. I still amazed at the price people are paying for these vehicles now. It often makes me think about the right time to sell mine (not saying I'm going to). I guess I'm constantly pondering what the 4runner redesign will do to the value of the current 5th gen in the future.

It really depends. Toyo could make it so awesome it blows other gens. away,
Or they could really screw it up and make it a uni-body.
Either way enjoy your Pro, you paid a really great price.

I would say the value going forward, for all 4Runners, will be based on what Toyota does. If Gen 6 is a monster, with a desirable design, body on frame, more HP, better transmission, etc etc, Gen 5 values will eventually suffer. If Gen 6 is less truck, and more crossover, it could boost residual values. I would avoid a first year new Gen product, even with Toyota.

All that being said, I've never seen a group of enthusiasts where the resale value seems to factor in so many discussions. I guess I am used to driving Euro cars that loose 50% of their value in 4-5 years. I went Toyota because I am tired of expensive repair bills once the warranty is gone.

The idea that you can expect to drive a car for 3 years or 40k miles, and then sell it at (close to?) MSRP is ridiculous. Sounds like a bubble to me :blabla:

I read this often, but I'm not sure what evidence you have that it applies to a 4R (this IS a 4R forum).

I owned the first year of the 5G and it was the best new vehicle I've owned in nearly 60 years of driving. Nor have I heard/read of similar issues with Toyotas in general. So, to your statement, I call BS.

I guess you guys are forgetting about the Gen 3 Tacoma’s. The 2016’s have been plaqued with many issues. Leaky rear diffs, auto tranny issues, howling rear diffs, etc.

I have zero concerns with buying a first prod year. Yes, there were issues in the past:

* Tundra has the cams and EVAP system issues.
* Tacoma and the rear diffs in 05
* Even issues that reached whole generation of trucks (i.e. Tacoma frame rust).

In all cases, Toyota took care of the problems. There will always be manuf. issues, but how Toyota has stepped up and fixed the problems, there is no worry on my part.

And the supposed Gen 3 Tacoma "plague" is so overblown.
