Calculated my cost per mile to operate...

Capital costs: $4200 for the truck
Maintenance and repair:
$40/year oil change (5 quarts synthetic and a filter)
$120 Tundra brake swap (eBay parts ftw)
$20 starter contact repair
$60 battery
$150 parts (Senco) +$200 labor clutch, throwout bearing, etc. replacement
$50 spark plug replacement (NGK Iridium)
$500 for new tires mounted
$100 for a winter set of wheels
$300 for winter tires and mounting
$1660 in total lifetime personal maintenance and repair costs
Operating expenses:
$35/year safety/emissions
$80/year registration
$360/year insurance (liability only, no accidents... wish it were cheaper)
$1500/year in gas for about 10,000 miles/year (varies somewhat)
$7900 in operating costs, or a hair under $2,000 annually
So, my cost per mile to operate is about 35 cents. But that includes my capital cost of the initial purchase.
My marginal cost per mile to operate (this is ignoring the initial capital layout, which is a sunk cost) is about 24 cents/mile.
My last car (a BMW 318i) I managed to get down to 12 cents/mile to operate; it was actually cheaper than taking the bus. The 4Runner's weakness is the fuel economy; even though I can get 23MPG (5-speed helps), it's still about 10 cents/mile in gas when gas is cheap, and you have to add the $1+/day insurance and registration costs.
I'm tempted to switch it over to CNG at some point.

Over the years, my business found this to be fairly accurate for almost any vehicle we ran.
There were exceptions, but it mostly applied to our towing vehicles.
