Caliper hitting 6 star 17" rim ??? Rim swap 5 star 17" to 6 atar 17"

So yeah.. Tried putting some new to me 6 star 17" rims with pretty new winter tires only to find the damn thing was hitting the front caliper on right side.
Now i have to leave one 5 star 17" rim on until this can be figured out or i put a grinder to the caliper.. Grrr!!!

Anyone ever experience this nonsense?

I put those rims on a tacoma I used to have, same problem. Ended up grinding down the caliper a little bit...

You have the SR5 so you don't even have the larger sport edition brakes right? Maybe the rubbing side has an aftermarket caliper? Doesn't make much sense to me why it wouldn't work.

Yeah.. As far as i can tell; the calipers on both sides look the same but the pass side doesn't have the markings/numbers on it. The driver side has some wheel play because the hub/bearings need replaced ( waiting for them in mail ) so not sure if it's not hitting on that side only because it's loose or if it is hitting pass side because it's an aftermarket caliper and slightly larger housing.

My bet is it's probably an aftermarket caliper but it could also be that the wheel bearing is bad or is pressed on too far. Those SE wheels run super close to the calipers anyway. Do all the wheels hit the caliper? Maybe one is cast different as well.

The only caliper being hit is front passenger side.
What i'm thinking is it's either:
1- Maybe the front driver side would be hitting also if the bearings were good and there was no slack in wheel / hub.
2- The passenger side caliper is aftermarket (missing markings that the driver side has) and is slightly bulkier or it was installed wrong..?
3- That one 6 star rim was cast differently.. Doubtfull.

I will pull rim, check caliper mounting, swap another 6 star rim on and see what happens. Worse case; put angle grinder to the caliper contact points.

You definitely have something wrong with your calipers/hubs/rotors or you have an aftermarket caliper. Those 17s are the sport model and they came with the 13wh calipers. You shouldn't have a problem..

Attached some more pics.
Driver side markings. Passenger side none but pic from above looks like caliper halves are a little off.. i tried measuring everything and it all seemed the same from driver and passenger side.. Caliper to studs and hub etc.
See how bad the thing hits even after trying to grind down?
Driver side rotor hub is stuck tight to hub assy with wheel and lug nuts off. Usually have to beat them loose with a hammer right?
Pass side rotor hub is loose with wheel and lug nuts off. Makes me wonder if something behind it is wrong. Possibly the hub and bearing assy were pressed too deep into eachother?
What do you brothers think?..

1/4" wheel spacers shouldn't be needed though. Something is wrong.. i'd rather fix it than spend money on avoiding it. Thanks though for your input.

While caliper looks odd or not the same as driver side.. The measurements i took from both sides (caliper to rotor hub edge, caliper to studs, etc).. And fact that the rotor hub is loose, not stuck in place like driver side is (normal i think with time and needs beating off) kinda makes me wonder if the issue is the hub and bearings?
Is it possible that it was pressed too far in?? Then when lugs are tightened.. It would be pulling wheel in too far and hit caliper that's not affected by hub and bearing location? Thats's what it feels like is happening. I can push wheel on and hold and spin but the more i tighten them; the more the rim hits the caliper.

Check the measurements from the hubs to the steering knuckle on both sides and compare, this will tell you if it's the hub
or not since the calpiers are attached the knuckle, if they are close to the same it has to be the caliper.

Did you order bearings for both sides?

No; just ordered driver side because it wobbles. The passenger side feels tight with no play. Thanks for suggestion; will try tomorrow morning and see what happens. Might have to order another hub or a caliper. Smh

Just thinking about it and if the hub/s are off you should be able to see it in relation to the caliper and rotor,
the rotor is attached to the hub and the caliper to the steering knuckle so any difference on either side would
show on how the caliper in centered on the rotor as long as the brake pads have the same wear.

I thought about how caliper is centered on rotor too and looks fine on both sides.. But maybe that changes when the lug nuts are tightened? I'll have to put the lug nuts on without wheel just to press the rotor onto hub and see if it changes it's location between brake pads.
Like i said.. The driver side rotor is stuck to hub.. The passenger side is loose. I have to tighten up the lug nuts on passenger side for the rotor not to spin or flop on the hub. Someone screwed the pooch somewhere here. Will see what i can figure tomorrow.

If you put that same wheel on the driver side does it hit the caliper?

As we discussed through text message, the hub cannot be pressed any further into the bearing. If the bearing is worn badly I have seen the rotor make contact with the caliper.

Have you checked the passenger side bearing for play?
Is the caliper bracket tight?

I’ve never seen an OEM wheel make contact with the caliper. That caliper looks suspect.

I have a spare 6 star like the one hitting, i put it on and it hit too. Must bevthe caliper then. Don't know what it's from but guess not supposed to be on the 4runner.
Everything seems tight on pass side.. So i'll see if i can het another caliper and see if it clears. If not.. I'll return caliper and figure something else. Thanks for the intel brother.
Will keep posted.
And my email must be lagging because still haven't gotten the email. Maybe tomorrow.

Replace the caliper. Looking at your 2nd and 3rd pics I see the piston pocket area on the pass side caliper is sitting closer the the hat of the rotor than the oem driver side.

Not sure on brands that do the rebuilding. I just get mine from car quest. Napa should be fine or any other chain store. Just make sure the markings are correct. Everything out there is going to be refurbished oem. Except what you have on there now. I have no idea what that is.
