Caliper relocation

Hey guys... Anyone know anything about caliper relocation kits to fit bigger rotors on a 96-98 runner. Any companies that make a kit? I'm running 20"x 9 wheels and my brakes need some attention.

I found this kit on underdog racing, but it's a little bit more than I was thinking of spending right now. I was (and still am) looking for more of just caliper relocation bracket. Planning on building my own setup for brakes. Gotta be cheaper than this, plus I want to pick my own components add stainess lines etc. I've never even heard of "stop-tech brakes" sounds kinda cheap to me. Anyone tried or heard of them?

yeah, I watched a super buildup on speed channel of a Supra with 600 HP and they used these brakes and red calipers...

I guess theyre good but Im really not interested in that expensive either...

Cool, Thanks for the info just had never heard of them before. Guess they're worth it.

I just redid my brakes and put the 20's on upgraded my brakes a little, here's what I did;

-Stainless lines
-Upgraded to Castrol SRF brake fluid, a good Synthetic works well too.
-New Ceramic pads, last were carbon metallic didn't really impress me and they make a lot of brake dust on the rims.

Really made a big difference, for cheap.
This stuff is easy to do if you're looking for more stopping power, my T4R already does much better than last summer with the 20's.
 
yep, I just put new ceramic all around on mine to, it really does help. mine were shot anyway so I went ahead with the good ones. I might go with the stainless lines next...
 
Ive had a stoptech 4wheel BBK on my past M5 and i currently have their SS lines on the truck now.

Fire...just wondering why you went with SRF? Its a DOT 5 and its going to such up moisture like no ones business. While i think its a great fluid, its really more expensive and more than you could ever need on the road with a 4runner. Its actually more hastle than its worth since you should really flush your fluid about every 6 months with Dot 5.

The only reason that I went with the SRF was basically that a friend of mine had enough at his shop to do my truck, so it was free. He uses it in his track car and says it's the best, and will use nothing else. I agree about it being a little pricey to use all the time. If I was paying I prob. would have gone with dot 4. But the SRF really does work well, if you can swing it.

Its always nice to have friends that have some left over. I agree with you though that its the best to have, but you will need to stay up with it due to moisture absorbtion. IF you want to stay with a Dot 5 and dont want to pay SRF prices, check out Motul 600 RBF.
 
There is no good reason to convert to DOT 5 (Silicon) unless you're racing. Even for racing, there are excellent DOT 4 fluids that have a 500+ degree boiling point. DOT 5 fluid can create many problems and MUST be changed frequently. Some systems are not silicon friendly. If you haven't converted yet, DON"T. If you have, don't convert back. You will have more problems. STAY AWAY FROM DOT 5 brake fluid, you will be sorry!

the exact same reason that i dont normally push people to a 5. Since oh boy said that he already decided to got to SRF....looks like he is staying with it.

Some rubber components in the system don't like silicon. Once silicon in introduced into the system it's almost impossible to get it all out, and 5 + 4 don't mix.

dot 5 SRF

Wow, didn't know dot 5 was such a heated issue! From what I can see the dot 5 works far better that my old stuff in terms of stopping the 20's. If it causes any problems, I haven't seen any.
Only thing is you have a change it more than normal, no big deal.
If it causes problems with rubber parts in the master etc. why would you use it in a high performance race car? My friend has 100's of thousands in his cars, the last thing he's going to do is put something in his cars that causes problems. A brake system is a brake system no matter how high permormance, or the application, all have rubber parts and seals. I agree with Casper and Koz that it is not really needed on a street car, dot 4 is fine. But I don't agree that it causes problems, it's just more expensive to use.

fire the issue that we are talking about is that you are using a stock master brake cyl. which may or may not have thick enough seals or seals made out of silicone resistant parts. While I agree with you that most cars can run it (especially those that are newer such as a 4runner).

Give us updates from time to time and let us know how things are going with it. I would be interested to hear them.

Here are some possible issues with DOT 5 brake fluid.

Dot 5 exhibits 3 times greater propensity to dissolve air and other gasses which can lead to a "spongy pedal" and reduced braking at high altitudes.

Water is not absorbed by silicone as in the case of DOT 3-4 fluids, and will remain as a separate globule sinking to the lowest point in the brake system, since it is denser.

Using it in an antilock brake system can reduce the operating efficiency. It is not compatible with most ABS system because it doesn't lubricate the ABS pump like a glycol based fluid.

It can destroy the seals in brake systems which rely on the moisturizer additives that are present in DOT 3/4

If silicone is introduced into an older brake system, the silicone will latch unto the sludge generated by gradual component deterioration and create a gelatin like goop which will attract more crud and eventually plug up metering orifices or cause pistons to stick.
