Calling all aftermarket battery box users.

So, my dumb 24F Bosch battery us not happy sitting on its flimsy plastic OEM battery tray. I have just now noticed this traveling wilbury recently after owning the dumb thing for about a year. It is shorter than the stock OEM design and is not happy staying put.

This got me looking at aftermarket options.

All the good aftermarket solutions, (Ruffstuff, etc. ) seem to be made for one of two battery selections. One is for an Optima. I don't think I want one of those with their spotty reputation.

The other is made for an Odyssey battery. Between the two, I'd go with the Odessy.

What aftermarket battery box do you guys have?

How did you mount it?

What battery brand and size did you go with?

Anybody fit something like an Interstate Mega-Tron in the one made for the Odyssey?

I use the Odyssey Extreme group 34 in a DIY mount. It’s a great battery.

I’m using a MTP-24f interstate currently. Didn’t know a group 27 fit.

A sheet metal shop should be able to bend you a tray out of stainless and put the nubs on the bottom like the plastic tray to keep it in place.

I like the group 65 batteries because of their RC and AH rating but they do not come in an F mount with the poles reversed.

I'm also running a 24F battery and had the same issue. Stock battery tray / tie down letting the battery breaking loose and bounce forward a few inches while wheeling. I just ordered a weld in tray box tray off amazon for around $22 (link below) in hopes that this will solve the problem. My game plan is to see if I can find a way to securely bolt it to the frame, but if it seems loose then I'll weld it. I'll report back after I hopefully get it all installed this weekend.

Great work on that mount. That thing looks a hell of a lot more solid than the stupid bracket. Are you still using the plastic tray on bottom?

Holy cow! The 31 series batteries are big, and heavy! How has your fender been holding up? Would you say that you are hard on it when you are wheeling? As far as bashing the front end around a good bit?

I am just worried that with my luck I would crack the fender where it is mounted. I am surprised that CBI went with a 31 option for their battery tray.

It was caused by wiggle. None wiggle is your best bet.
Keep in mind- I've got dual batts in a Ruffstuff box....
After reinforcement was welded to the inner fender and a bracket added and attached to the front support in 2014:

And that solved the issue so far.

One thing about the ruffstuff box and the optima- and I don't know if this is true for single boxes or oddesy boxes- the metal hold-down is very close the the post and clamp. It hasn't really been an issue, just requires some awareness.

Good info there about the body cracking due to wiggle as well as some peripheral concerns about the metal hold down's proximity to the terminal posts.

I mainly wanted a more secure battery tie down situation going on. As is, the smaller 24F wants to move around. That, and the flimsy plastic tray is not much help. I have a lot going on on the passenger side with my washer bottle relocation behind my headlight to accommodate the 35s. So I am not sure that I need the dual battery set up, although I am not against it or anything, I just don't want the battery flopping around causing problems when wheeling.

There are other options than going with a battery box.

[MENTION=119532]Road Bull[/MENTION] Yep, you got what I was trying to say, about the cracks with weight and wiggle and the potential fun of a wide metal hold-down.

To prevent wiggle I used a thin piece of wood to put in between the battery and the cross mounting bar. the bolts catches the first few threads then presses the wood down onto the battery helping to hold it into place.

I built a second battery tray on the left rear of the engine but have since gone back to one large arm in the main location. So far its been enough for me.

Yeah, I was thinking about just buying this for a single Odyssey 34RPC1500T.

I might just see if my friend that welds can just fab something up.

Yes the Batteries Plus X2 group 31 was quite heavy and I probably pulled something heaving that 75 lb behemoth in place. So far I have not noticed any issues with my fender, although I haven’t poked around much under there to check on it. I would say I’m about as hard on my truck as the average bear, do a bit of high speed rough roads that sometimes rattle bolts loose, Broken Arrow in Sedona (Although, Pink Jeep runs that trail all day so how hard can it be?) etc. I’ve been happy with it and I would have no problem installing it again, even if that means adding more support to the fender to need it up.

You could always get a lithium if you’re worried about weight. Same size as a group 31 but it only weighs 31 lbs. And it’s a grand. 100Ah 12V LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery - Battle Born Batteries

That's the nice part, they are adjustable to fit a lot of different batteries. So you're not limited to a specific size.

The only "issue" I ran into is my group 35 Odyssey Extreme sits a little high than some other group 35's. As a result, there was a decent sized gap at the front mounting location. It just seemed like too much pressure was going to be required to eliminate the gap, so I just placed an appropriate sized plastic washer/spacer to fit the gap and tightened it down snug.

I have a battery box from Ballistic Fabrication. I think it is great although it is not an exact mounting fit. Still very good and I'm happy. I had it welded in. I advise you do the same with any box you get.

I only have a single battery and I use the factory size, heavy duty battery from Costco. I think it is 700 CCA.
