Calling all audiophiles and audio buffs

Okay guys,

So I have an 07 lmtd with the JBL Synthesis system in it. It is time for a new stereo system- HU, speakers, etc. I am so out of the loop on whats good anymore I need help.

Here are a few things:

-I dont need a cd player-dont even own cds
-I almost exclusively use my phone between spotify and Iheartradio I am all set. so I would like bluetooth- hands free is nice
-dont need nav-have it on my phone
-I dont need some sort of crazy subwoofer setup-I would even be good with 2 8's or 1 good 10
-I listen to literally everything. Main genres are rock/hard rock, electronic, and country-in no particular order
-would like to keep steering wheel controls
-As far as budget goes....I dont even know where to start. I dont mind spending the money as long as its worth it and is a good deal/investment
-I also dont need this tomorrow so I have time to plan
-I would like to update all speakers- I had CDT components (sony amp) in my previous T4R with an Eclipse HU and Eclipse subs (diamond amp)- Wasnt a fan of that setup, at all.


Anything I am missing?

One of those magic boxes that let you keep factory controls.

It really doesn't take much to get something decent into the truck... even with a budget of $120 per par for speakers, and $150 for a mini amp.

If you really need better, I would get dynamat or some type of sound deadening before actually throwing cash at better audio hardware.

To make something 3db louder, takes double the amplification to do so. So its a lot better to make the car quieter, than it is to try and make the audio louder.

If you want more, you are probably going to have to throw out a budget, because skys the limit with this stuff.

i'm in this same boat. dont know whats good anymore and not trying to break the bank.

my first question, do you have rear camera / do you want double din with a screen? i've seen tons of threads of guys swapping out for a single DIN but I need me my backup camera.

NEX Series

One of the best radios on the market right now seem to be the Pioneer NEX 4100/4200 series. They are well made, amazing bang for buck value and the features are endless. They have HDMI, carplay, and android auto so it's pretty endless with what you can do. At least, my personal suggestion.

Pretty sure most if not all receivers will work with steering wheel controls as you need to buy a separate adapter for those.

Dont have a backup cam and dont want or need one.

I will check out the NEX series.

-lets say:
sub $200-250 for HU- dont need dbl din. single is fine....dont need movies and all sort of crazy stuff. I would rather sub that out and spend the same money for a better built unit

amp to suit
depending on the sub.....$150 to $300

I can tell you what I just put into mine... Don't know that it will help you as you have the JBL system, but the following is currently blowing the OEM stereo away in my rig.

Dynamat 10425 (18" x 32" x 0.06") 2 rolls, 1 for each pair of doors.

Think I'm just over $500 all-in.

Had to fabricate mounting plates for the front door tweeters but that's pretty easy.

Skipping the Dynamat, the backup cam, and USB+Aux Audio extension, would have saved $80 or so.

Skipping the steering wheel control adapter and harness, and parking brake bypass would have saved another $70ish.

I have a 2003 4Runner Limited and I want to put in a GPS/back up camera/satellite radio unit. I am looking a a Kenwood DNX 893s unit.
Any recommendations?

I like how jbl synthesis sounds, I'm guessing that previous owner wasn't blasting music too loud. Therefore speakers are still good. I also want to media stream from my cellphone, so i ordered some magic box from China with Bluetooth, steering wheel controls, usb aux and hands free calling. It's around 80 bucks CAD.

has anyone looked into the pioneer appradio4. I mean if you do everything from your phone it wouldnt be such a bad idea to integrate that into your car. pandora/spotify, gps, web browsing, youtube, etc etc etc. with some of those pioneer decks they are only limited to certain model phones as far as mirror link goes. i bought one 3 years ago , forgot the model but it was a new model, but bought a note 3 4 months before and my radio would not mirror link to it because pioneer said it wasnt campitable. i thought to myself my thats why i bought this to use the mirror link.

oh well.

That doesn't seem like a bad unit. I have the DNX693S and from all I can tell the only difference is a few hundred bucks and Android Auto. The interface is a little slow I think but I have nothing except the stock nav unit to compare it to . I am happy with it. I will echo the others and say buy from Crutchfield. They will set you up with all the right mounting brackets and the module to keep your stereo controls. So far it has all worked well for me...

If you want the best sound quality, and dont care about nav or having a double din, then you cant beat the pioneer deh-80prs. It comes with a mic you plug in the headunit, and it will auto tune the system for the best response, for both time allignment and equalization. Im currently running that as the only processing for a 2 way active setup and I am very impressed with the auto eq and auto time allignment, as well as overall tunability of it

If you know your way around Android and can root your device there's an app that allows full mirroring from the phone.
