Calling all K&N filter owners!!!

So I recently acquired a K&N filter for free off the same guy who I got the LC coils from. He took it out of his 2000 Taco, and just wanted to give it away.

After getting it home, I decided to shoot him an e-mail and ask why he wanted to get rid of it. He told me that if you don't oil these filters properly or enough, they screw up your MAF sensor.

Can anybody confirm this?? Those of you with K&N filters, have you had issues with your MAF??

As cool as a lifetime filter would be, I don't want to cause myself any issues down the road......

I have the same one. I have been using it for 100,000+ miles. I did have one issue. I over oiled the filter after cleaning. I even talked to K&N. They did say to spray it sparingly. Since then I have had zero problems.
 
Over-oiling can cause contamination of your MAF sensor, and once contaminated you may be able to clean it if you use the right chemical (some will further destroy it), or it may need to be replaced. Make sure you let it dry before re-installing, like overnight kind of thing, and you should be fine.

5w-40 motor oil :D JK, K & N has stuff they sell for you to use, dont know what it is of the top of my head. Yeah as long as you dont over oil it, it should be good, if you can the MAF every once in a while it should help too. My dad has had that style K&N in his jetta for the past 6 years and its covered well over 200k miles (with the filter, more miles on the car)!
 
I own one too and have never had a problem out of it, I bought the filtercharger kit with it which comes with the K&N cleaning solution and their filter oil. I love my K&N, in fact its coming up on time to clean it again.
 
I think I have about 20,000 miles on mine.

What do y'all do to clean it?

I know there is a kit and I'll definitely buy it, but was just wondering what all is involved with cleaning it.

How much does the kit cost?
 
I was going to either get a K&N or a TRD air filter but the techs at Toyota told me not to bother, get the regular paper filter since its just as good if not better. I don't want to be bothered with oiling a filter and having the MAF getting fouled up.
 
its called the K&N filter recharge kit, and it comes with a cleaner and a can of oil. kit cost about $15 i believe and is very simple. spray the cleaner, rinse, repeat if needed, let dry, and oil it up.

ive had my cold air intake for my runner for about 60,000 miles and only had a problem once, and thats when i didnt let the filter fully dry before reinstalling it in the truck. just keep a can of maf cleaner in the garage and clean it every so often. i try to clean it every time i use the recharge kit.
 
you can buy the "K&N recharge kit" on Amazon for pretty cheap. Don't over oil or you will get an engine light.

Also, consider getting a dust cover for when you go out wheeling.
 
x2to the Filter Recharge kit. $15 and easy to follow instructions. Got a dirty MAF code when I was wheeling 2 weekends ago, but cleared it with a Scan Gauge II and it hasn't been back since.

I use that same filter, along with having a hole cut in my airbox like the deckplate mod...but minus the actual deckplate.

I've had it installed for about 15,000 miles, and it's still just the factory oil, right out of the box. No problems whatsoever. I did clean my MAF about a month ago, and it was pretty dirty. However, I never had any issue's...I just cleaned it as preventative maintenance. I've always used K&N filters on all my vehicles, and I will continue to be a fan of them until I have a problem. I also get used oil analysis done on my engine oil, and my silicon level's are always low/normal...meaning the air filter is working as it should.
 
Do a side by side comparison in acceleration with and without the K & N. I bet you won't feel any difference other than wishful thinking. A clean filter is just as good. I have K&N on two of my cars, and its nice because they last forever, but on my Toyota paper is fine, a stock engine is not starving for air.
 
reason why i went with a COI is because i didn't want to do the deckplate mod and i still wanted more air for the engine. i didn't want to do the deckplate and isr mod because they are technically not California emissions legal to mess with all of that, and i didn't want to have any problems passing smog.
 
I have same filter, the way i clean, i put the dishwasher in bowl and add water and drop the filter in the bowl for 2 hour and than take out and dry it. been using for 3 years now no problem.
 
I have one on both my runners! I also had one on my tacoma also.i have never had any problems with k&n. Since i have the snorkel on the trail rig i change it out. I put a paper one in just for trail use. I noticed that it gets a lil nastier due to the snorkel taking it straight in.

Probably, but I wouldn't risk it. Its special stuff, the consistency of WD-40 but made so it doesn't dry out. It catches the junk in the oil, not so much the cotton.

Its kind of like the old oil bath air cleaner. They would run oil into the air cleaner, pass air over it and around bends. The theory was that particles in the air wouldn't make the turns and would stick in the oil. Which is kind of like your nose, the particles that get stuck turn into boogers. So I think you should try oiling it with snot :D
