I found this hatchet in my backyard, for a long time I would just walk by it, till one day i stopped
(1934 Bridgeport Hardware Co., The : Official "Boy Scout" Hatchet)

sand / grind rust off

Nice work.

It will rust again unless you live in a dry area with little to no humidity. I would wipe it down with WD-40 every now and then to keep moisture away from the metal.

Nice work! You could do a cold-bluing treatment on the steel. It's basically like staining and it's used for guns. It will give it a bluish/blackish look though.
