Kind of big, sorry:

Desert
This is pretty much our actual backpacking checklist. 2 adults and a 9 year old. With each trip this list has been revised to better reflect what we use. The list is altered based on potential weather scenarios and we don't rely completely on the forecast. Also how many days is a factor. All foods except Mountain Homes are repackaged for as little packaging/weight/trash as possible. We use synthetic sleeping bags- still warm when wet. We have much of it packaged and ready to throw in the packs. Food I make up a day or two before. Sleeping bags and pads are stored loose until compressed for the trip. If rain's likely we bring a second painter's tarp and use the cord to make a lean-to for eating and hanging out. No food or smelly items go in the tent. Car camping is similar but there's a cooler, full size lantern, folding chairs, extra water and that kind of stuff thrown in. Sometimes I'll even throw the PETT up on the rack, especially for the desert.
Whether car camping or backpacking we use established sites whenever possible and practice leave no (more) trace. Personally not a fan of campgrounds, more the solitary sort. Well, as solitary as you're going to get with 3 people. :moon:
