Hello, I need help. I adjusted 3 exhaust valves on the '00 4runner with 2.7L engine. I replaced the shims on top of the valve lifters. I was having a misfiring problem for the last 3 weeks. Anyways, I had to pull out the camshaft on the exhaust side. Instead of making marks on the camshaft, I eye-ball'ed the alignment against the input camshaft. The camshaft has gears and it is engaged with the intake camshaft. When I put the camshaft back, I cannot recall the original alignment. I am torn between 2 positions separated by a tooth on the gear.
When I originally pulled the camshaft out. I had the alignment marks on the intake camshaft ligned up with the pin on the exhaust camshaft. Since I am having problems determining the correct alignment, I rotated the damper pulley and lined it at TDC for #1 cylinder. The alignment marks on the gear of the intake camshaft lines up with the alignment markers on camshaft bracket. However, since the alinment pin on the exhaust camshaft does not line up with the alignment markers on the exhaust camshaft bracket. Shifting the camshaft by a tooth still does not make the alignment marker and pin line up.
I had to choose between 2 positions. I chose one. Now, the engine does not misfire anymore, the idle is smooth, however, the engine sounds like a diesel. The noise is coming from the exhaust camshaft. Does anybody know the proper way to line up the camshaft?
