Can an Oversize Napa Gold 1515, Oil Filter be used on a 3rd Generation T4R?

Hi folks I'm new to this forum, even though I have read a lot of posts prior to officially signing up for the forum.

My question is....

Has anyone used the Wix 51515 or the Napa Gold 1515 on a 3rd Generation Toyota?

I've got a 1997 SR5, V6 and would like to find out if anyone in Yota land has used this filter with success.

Today, I switched out a Fram TG "Tea Cup" size filter for the Napa Gold 1516. I did not change the oil, since I only had 4K miles on it, and plan on running this fill of Valvoline Synpower 10W30 for at least 8K miles.

For future reference, has anyone used the Napa 1515 as their filter?

On 8/19/2010 I, via PM, suggested that Mongo take the question directly to the 3rd gen crowd with a fresh thread in 3rd gen. Chris, aka CJ3Flyr.

I have complied with the suggestion. I did not know the site was dividied into T4R by Generation. I have made not of my error.

Warning, total newb question! How did you replace the filter without getting oil all over everything? I get oil over every goddamn thing when it's completely drained!

You should try using a Gallon size zip lock bag, or a clear bag from the produce section of the supermarket, around the filter and the base of the oil filter when changing it from the wheel well on the drivers side.

Then you will not have to worry about spilling oil all over the place since the bag will catch the oil and filter. You don't have to spend a lot of time on your clean ups if you use this approach.

That's a really good idea! I never read that suggestion anywhere else either. I use a paper shop towel now and it works pretty well, but I'm going to try the produce bag. Thanks!

Glad I only went up to the Napa Gold 1516 for the replacement.

Easiest way to avoid a mess is to pull off the skid-plates, so when you are in the wheel well, you don't get dirty and the oil actually goes into the pan :thumb3:

Also, Toyota filters and royal purple all the way

EltonH, I share your sentiment. I thought I was alone on that. And if somebody is getting oil on the brakes during an oil change, perhaps that somebody should be paying for their oil change to be done for them.
