Can I drive with malfunctioning sensor?

I get P0340 after changing my TB recently and it wont go away. I wont be able to work on it for a couple days, but it is my daily driver. Can I drive safely with this cam position sensor being faulty or bad without doing any damage to the engine? I didn't know exactly what the sensor would do other than give information to the ECM about where it thinks the timing is for the cams... Any thoughts?

So how does it run with that code? It is a rather vital sensor so I wouldn't think you'd want to run it that way. Does the CEL stay on steady or does it flash on occasion? 0340 is either the sensor, the connector is loose or bad to the ecm. Luck! :cowboy:

It's a non interference motor. If the truck runs, i wouldn't worry too much about driving it to work and back until you can get it fixed. The bum sensor probably throws the ECU into a default map for the time being.

Side note: I am not an expert nor mechanic.

Yeah it won't blow up on you. When the engine throws an emissions code it usually will default to the stock fuel maps which tend to run rich to protect the engine.

It shouldn't be a problem. If you don't have a 0330 or a 0325 code for the knock sensors then the ECU should be advancing and retarding timing as needed so you don't have any pre/post-ignition. The ECU uses the crank sensor for ACTUAL crankshaft position and speed. I extracted the code and wiring schematic info from the FSM for you. This is an indication sensor only and doesn't control anything. Like [MENTION=110708]Brveagle[/MENTION] said the ECU will revert back to it's default values. Hope this helps.

Usually when something like this happens when doing some work that the sensor is unplugged, misaligned and or corroded, take it out, clean it, check the wiring and so forth. Sometimes a little tap on the sensor will get it going. You can also use a multimeter to test the sensor.
