yeah I believe that is true, but it will be major trimming since that size is a true 33" diameter tire. You will probably have to trim the front bumper and the pinch weld by quite a bit. If you aren't afraid of a sawzall I would be interested in seeing the outcome with the new tires. I know this has been done on similar year Tacoma's but I haven't seen a stock 4runner with 255 tires on it.
I wouldn't consider anything wider than a 255 without a lift though. Most tire fitment issues are because of width, not height.

I've been thinking about trying to fit 285/75's on my '99 with just 1.5" spacer lift in the back, and an 1" lift from adjustable struts up front. I think it will work. This is in theory of course, I have not done it.

That should work, but it may rub a little on the frame at full lock. Mine tires do slightly. I would still do a little trimming, I trimmed my pinch welds back and with my custom bumper I have the clearance up front. But before the new bumper I had to trim.
Skinner tires (like the 255, vs having a 285 tire), I bet wont rub at full lock, just a little trimming on the bumper and pinch weld and you should be good.

Theoretically, fully stuffed is fully stuffed so an IFS lift doesn't actually allow all that much for bigger tires. Pounding and cutting does the most. Lifting changes the angle at which the control arms are at rest. This allows for more clearance most of the time (when the suspension isn't being compressed).
Obviously the reason we cut and pound is so we don't rub at full lock and/or full compression. The difference between a lifted and a non-lifted IFS truck is simply that a non-lifted truck is closer to full compression at rest so it doesn't take as big of a bump to compress (and rub). What I'm getting at is if you cut and pound just as much or maybe just a little more than you would have to with a 2.5-3" lift, then you shouldn't have any more rubbing than a 3" lifted truck would. I've seen it done on a '99 with 255/85s and looked up close, no rubbing.
