Can i make my own spare key?

I know I can make my own on my 4th Gen but you have to wait for 5th Gen owners to reply if you can do the same for a 5th Gen.....
That being said if you bought it new from a dealer, you should at some point be getting a second key from Toyota, many 2023 models due to supply shortages were shipped with only one key, recently Toyota is starting sending the second key via the dealers starting with the earlier production vehicles first and going to the latest.
Even if you bought it used from a dealer I'm guessing you maybe able to get the second key if it was never sent/given to the previous owner.
Either way you may want to post this in the 5th Gen forum section for more views/replies.
I did buy it used but not from a toyota dealer, i can't believe they want that much for one.

The OP has posted his question in the 5th Gen forum and it appears that the last couple of year models have a different key setup and can only be done with the dealer special programing tool.
Yes, as I said mine is a 5th gen and I went to a locksmith who was able to grind and program a new key.

Yes I know you have a 5th Gen because you stated that in your post...but yours is an older 5th Gen...not a 2022 or 2023 like the OP has, as I stated for the latest 5th Gens you simply can't go to a locksmith to have a key programmed because they don't have the proper programmer, you have to go to a dealer because the keys have changed and only the dealers have the proper programmer to program these newer keys.

I just bought an Xtool D7 scan tool from Amazon. It was $360 after some rebates. It can supposedly program smart key fobs. I went through the process and it looks like it would work. It didn't work for my issue, but that is another story. It should be easy to program a second key if you have one that works. If you have an older key with an actual physical key to put in the ignition it's much easier and you don't need the programmer. You can buy the keys from Tom's key or on Amazon and program it with a sequence of door openings and trip odometer presses. The videos are on YouTube.

Mine has push to start, i'm still trying to decide what to do toms key said there's will not work yet.
That Xtool D7 looks pretty nice. There are so many scan tools i don't which one to buy all my cars/trucks are toyotas. :banana:
