75w-90 is usually a synthetic or semisynthetic. 80-90 hardly ever is in the stores.
I run 75w-140 in the rear and 75w-90 everywhere else.

Why do you run 75w-140 in the rear if you don't mind me asking.

the transfer case requires a special fluid. reason is it has electrical devices in the tranfercase and the bearings require additives to reduce wear. $80 a QT..

Really? Never heard of this, but I don't have an electronic xfer case.
Any GL-5 fluid is, by default, packed with anti-wear additives. The GL rating pretty much designates how much additive is necessary.
80-90wt is GL5 spec. I use that gear on on my GM sedan with a limited rear diff.. cannot use synthetic in that diff... clutch will cause chatter .
many use 75-90wt mobil synthetic in the diff's.. also the toyota dealerships use this gear oil.

my diff's still have mobil synthetic 75-90wt and still looking like new.
cold temps not a problem ..
I do not live in a 100F plus area .. so some in these hot spots do use 145wt gear oil...they also put on a heat sink to reduce the diff temp...
This is the 3rd gen forum.
You're muddying the water with info for a newer 4runner or GM product.
If you put what vehicle you had in your sig people could figure that out quicker.

Sorry for the confusion! I have a 1997 4runner. I only post in the 3rd gen section, so I wasn't aware of the cross thread issue. I went to a different shop and just went with what the owners manual said. However, they only had MasterPro oil. So I hope MasterPro is of good quality. I'm not sure when the previous owner did the last fluid change, but everything looked super clean! No metal shavings in the dif! So I'm stoked!
