Can I stick it in Low Range 2WD

I have the J shifter T-case with 4H and 4L. Part time 4WD with the center diff lock. Sometimes I want to use low range for compression braking or other reasons but I don't wanna be in 4WD due to bind-up etc, like if I'm on pavement. Since I will be swapping out my front diff assembly soon, is there anything I can do to selectively disengage the front while in Low? Maybe put a valve in the vacuum line to prevent engagement?

With ADD, the driver side axle is always spinning, as well as the front shaft.

On a related note, since the driver's side shaft is always spinning, does this mean that if you need to put on a spare tire that isn't the same size as the rest of them, you should rearrange your wheels so the spare goes on the front passenger side?????

It wouldn't matter. That's the whole purpose of the ADD, so that the front doesn't spin in 2WD, just the driver's half shaft does. Both CVs will spin with the hubs but they won't be connected inside of the differential until it goes into 4WD, which will then cause the front driveshaft to spin. In 2WD, the front shaft doesn't spin with the vehicle which is why you would be able to spin it freely (or should assuming your ADD works).

Either side is fine. When the ADD is disconnected, no real force is applied to the diff (even though the spider gears are driven by the driver's side axle, it doesn't do anything else). Heck, for short distances it would be ok to have mismatched tires on the rear. It is called a differential for a reason... (assuming you don't have a clutch-type LSD in the rear or a locked/locking differential)
