Can I unscrew the manual shifter knob?

My shifter knob on my 96 runner is falling apart,(the leather is tearing) I want to replace it but before I try to unscrew it and break something I thought I'd ask you experts if I can do that or not? So can I unscrew that?

Isn't there a philips bolt somewhere in the shaft?

You can unbolt the 4wd shift knob.

Yes it just unscrews. Grab it with both hands and turn it lefty loosy and it should come off

You can unbolt the 4wd shift knob.

No screws, both knobs just unscrew.

I think the push-button 4WD has some sort of screw, but yeah, like the others said, the lever operated 4WD unscrews like the shifter.

Thanks all. I'm famous for breaking bolts, etc when tightening or un-tightening so I figure asking the question could save me a lot a heart ache.

I thought "May I" implied "do I have your permission to unscrew the shifter knob. I also thought that "Can I" implied "is it possible" to unscrew the shifter knob. I think I have my permission, but I didn't know if it was possible

To answer your question; yes you may unscrew your shifter knob.

You are smart to ask, if broken or damaged there's no going back. Especially when the part needed is only sold as part of a complete assembly. Meaning more $ more $ more $. Yeah, better to ask.
