Can I use my 3rd gen spare tire as normal one?

I need new tires on the back 2 tires. Im running 265/70/R16 and i dont have the money to buy new tires and replace all 4 yet. The spare tire for my 3rd gen looks good to use. it doesnt look like a spare tire either (its not skinny and small like on cars) the spare tire is actually a Wrangler ..err something, but the size on it is 265/70/R16 also. i was wondering if i can buy the exact same tire somewhere and then mount them on. so instead of buying 4 tires or 2 ..ill just be buying 1 and using my spare as another 1.

EDIT** does anyone have a spare they want to sell? or if they upgrade tire size and still have the old spare ? 265/70/R16

As long as it is the same size as the other tires, you can use it as road tire, and use one of your more worn out ones as a spare. I would have it balanced and inspected for any problems before installing it though.

I'd check it for it's production date too. I have a Goodyear Wrangler RT/S spare in 265/70R16 which came with my '97 'Runner. It has never been used. It is almost thirteen years old though, and likely dry rotted a bit. I might use it as a very temporary spare, but would never trust such an old tire for regular highway travel.

ouch, that means mines prob that old too, i got the wrangler Rt/S spare also and its been there since i've had the car which was 2001, so im guessing its as old as yours, but if it looks good how can it not still run

For short, slow runs as a spare it's probably fine. I'd be afraid to use it especially for highway driving in the summer.
