Can someone explain speaker locations for three stock options?

I have an '05 Sport with the JBL 10 speaker system, so that is my baseline (not sure how this changed across 4th gen). There are speakers near the top of the rear columns at the back of the vehicle - on either side of the rear window as you look back through the interior.

My understanding of the options is as follows:
-Base Stereo: 6 speakers
-Navigation: 8 speakers
-JBL Stereo: 10 speakers

Are the speakers in the rear columns the ones missing for the Navigation option? I recently saw a T4R for sale where there are mirrors in the rear column spots that we have speakers on our JBL system. Is this standard for the Navigation option? What do those mirrors show you - the contents of your cargo area??

The mirrors were for backing out of say, a parking space between vehicles; it allows you to see to the sides of the rear of the car (for instance another car driving down an aisle or pedestrians). I find them GREAT for monitoring the blind spots while on the road; also use them to make sure lane changes are safe.
And yes those spots are used for the mirrors on models that don't have speakers there.

I'm actually a bit of an expert with this, as I've owned both types, replaced the speakers on both, and traded my mirrors for the speaker grilles. I thought that the navigation had 10 speakers. I used to own an 03 Sport with the JBL 10 speakers, now I own an 08 SR5 with the 6 speakers. I've already added the stock sub enclosure to my SR5, and am planning to add the rear tweeters some time soon.

Yes, the base stereo is 6 speakers, 2 front tweeters, 2 front 6x9's and 2 x 6.5's in the rear doors. The mirrors are blind spot mirrors, they help you see the sides of your car when backing up or changing lanes, I actually got used to having them, but I don't miss them now that they're gone

Thanks for both replies so far - interesting to hear what the mirrors help with. Per the brochure, the Nav system has 8 speakers. I guess these must be the two that were deleted compared to the 10 speaker system, per the one vehicle I saw with those mirrors and nav. Can any nav owners verify this?

Just wondering as there appeared to be scratches around the mirrors in the photos I saw, which initially had me wondering if they were added on later...

Mine has nav, so there are 8 speakers. The rear pillars have the mirrors.

I have nav and mine has the two rear speakers. No mirrors. It's an 03 if that helps.

Hmmm...I just downloaded the 2003 brochure. Looks like Nav came with 10 speakers at that time. I haven't tracked every year, but in the years I'm targeting (07-09) Nav came with 8 speakers.

Thanks for the input! I haven't looked at the specs for all years of the 4th gen.
