Can someone tell me what this wire is?

I've taken the skid guard off and on a few times dealing with the cooling system, and today I noticed this wire was unplugged. I looked around and can't find where it goes.

The 91 4Runner seems to be functioning normal, so should I just take some wire cutters to it and be done with it? KIDDING.

Bonus question: You might be able to tell in the photo that the thing it connects to is super greasy. What is it called? Drive shaft? The axles go right into it. My left CV joint is ****ed and I'm going to get it replaced, and I am wondering if I'll just end up getting the the whole shaft thing replaced. Sorry I don't know what these parts are, I am barely mechanical.

Though I did fix the cooling system!

Not entirely sure, but looks like it could be the line for an electric diff lock.
If that's true then you dont want to cut it.

The thing that is super greasy which your axles go into is the front differential, defiantly aren't going to replace the whole thing, but the seal might need to get replaced.

2nd gen's didn't have an elocker available, i don't think toyota ever offered one for the 7.5" front differentials found in 86-95.5 IFS 4runners and trucks. The connectors look similar but Elockers are usually bigger if I recall correctly

More than likely it's for a temp or oil pressure sensor.
at first i thought it might be fore your 4WD indicator but it looks like that is still connect on the left side axle shaft near the diff

clean it up and post a picture of the connector. with as much wiring loom as you show I would guess you will find something up near the intake that is missing a connector

Okay, thanks. That sounds cheaper.

This truck is funny. My ex pressured me to buy it, which I regretted as soon as it happened. After fixing its overheating problem I've kind of fallen in love with it. I just want to baby it, and I don't imagine I'll actually sell it.

I just realized, could this be my speedometer connection? Because my speedometer doesn't function, and I haven't delved into that yet.

was figuring it was aftermarket, but I agree with Dropzone, mostly cause he has a second gen that is sick

Do your 4wd light turn on when shift to 4x4 mode? If yes then its not most likely anything with add stuff. If not, then it could be added switch.
What else do not work on your truck?

If I plug it in and show it to a psychiatrist will he give me Adderall?

on the real note though. Just look around for the other end of the connector. Im not that familiar with the ADD system but i would assume with that disconnected you have no 4 wheel drive.

Maybe I don't have 4WD then. Because the light doesn't come on. I didn't know there was a light!

And now I feel like a real idiot from those times I turned on my 4WD on a few patches of unimproved roads, feeling like a real badass.

That connector is for the subharness leading to the main engine harness. Look around your driver wheel well area and you should see the other end coming off the engine harness around there.

Your 4wd probably works. The switch on the transmission engages the vacuum solenoids. Vacuum solenoids then engage ADD on the diff. ADD internals move and activate the switch (which is what you have pictured, installed onto the face of the diff). Switch closes circuit and activates dash light.

4wd portion could work without indicator light portion working. Find the other end of the connector. It's on the driver side somewhere. I'd look on mine but I no longer have the stock engine... I just know on mine it connects near the oil filter area. Yours could have got snagged on a belt and ripped out wires or something.

Also wanted to add: clean up that engine and fix those leaks! I count like 5 drip marks from those hoses alone.

Kidding. But seriously.

Good luck

So I looked through the wiring diagrams and I can't find this particular plug. I think it's this one here:

aluminum chloride hazards

Any ideas?
well you have a 3.0 so a lot of the wiring is gonna be different than what is shown by the 22RE screen shot..

Dunno what AlCl3 has to do with your question...unless you were asking about deodorant:cheers:

i think 4Reak Show is onto something here

I don't think that is for your VSS (variable speed sensor) because it looks the plug you show is 2 prong, VSS has 3 connectors where it plugs in

THANK YOU. It's getting dark now so I'll have to look around for it another time.

And you're right, the 4WD does work. I tested it out carefully, there is no mistaking it.

I have this pic, maybe it ll help you. It should represent 2gen ADD vacuum and wiring stuff.
