Can XREAS handle the weight of Shrockworks?

My beautiful fiance' decided to slightly remodel the front bumper of "our 4runner" aka my baby on a 18" tall piece of concrete that she "didn't see" If you ask me personally it looked like a giant tombstone kinda hard to miss considering I drove through the exact same area about 30 seconds before her. Anyways if you cant tell I'm still a little PTFO. So my question is do I have to upgrade the shocks and springs before shrockworks? or can it handle the weight for a little while? I 'm just trying to figure out the order to do things now. Because I was just getting ready to purchase my daystar spacer lift but since the remodeling of the bumper that is driving me insane everytime i see it I would much rather get a bumper on it to prevent further accidents. so what are the opinions?

Thanks, TT

regardless, you might as well go ahead and place the order with shrockworks, i hear its takes months to get those things. plenty of time to upgrade the suspension

:iagree:

TTurner,

SW Bumper on stock suspension has been done...but that Member hated it.

I'm still on stock suspension, but I want to swap it out and get the SW Bumper for protection reasons.

AND for those AHoles that piss me off.

I ran my shrockworks with the stock suspension with a Cornfed 3/2 Spacer lift. Needless to say, I now have the Overland Warehouse 2.0 kit. I did run the stock suspension for about 4 months though. It is fine, just know that you will definitely want to change it to a full coilover kit eventually.

Beware that the ARB is heavier than the SW. Also, it took my bumper 18+ weeks to come in so be prepared to wait at least 12.

Will it work? Yes.

Will it work well? No.

You will pay the price in handling, both in safety and comfort. You will bottom out going into simple driveways, and the front will sag a good 1" lower than it is already making the rake even worse.

I would place the order now, and work on your suspension while you wait. Don't expect the bumper for 4 or 5 months, possibly more.

Wow I had no idea a steel bumper up front would affect the suspension so much, how much does one of these things weigh?

My buddy put an ARB on his '04 Tacoma about a month ago with stock suspension and it looked fine to me, felt the same too when I rode in it. But he has since done a full 3/2 suspension replacement, so now he's king of the road!

Isn't the question more about the springs rather than the XREAS? I don't know from experience, but my guess is that the XREAS system would be able to handle the additional weight (because XREAS just dampens like regular shocks), but the OEM spring should be upgraded to hold the extra weight so the front doesn't sag or bottom out easily.

They weigh 146 lbs. You remove about 20 lbs worth of metal/plastic when you install it, so figure about 126lbs (rough estimate) over stock.

Yes and no. Xreas really doesn't do much of anything. I have never met a single person that missed the Xreas after it was gone (i.e., suspension swap). You will have slightly better luck with a bumper on a sport edition than you would on a non-xreas 4Runner, but it won't perform miracles.

Personally I would think that if you are going to spend $1200+ on a steel bumper, that you would want to make the necessary upgrades to properly support it.

If $$ is an issue, you can get a full OME set-up for $500-$600.

I miss it, I thought on-road performance was much better than a.) the regular OEM shocks on friend's 4R's and b.) the shocks I have on there now (I'm embarrassed to say, I don't know the model, only that they were Bilstein HD's). I think my current ride is fairly lousy and people in the backseat get pretty ticked if I go over bumps too fast.

To be fair, I still have my stock springs and 140k on the truck... I probably should replace my springs.

My wife "remodeled" my bumper too pulling into the garage- hitting my other car in the process. You'll want a coilover up front. You can do icon and lower it down to stock ride height, or level out the truck with the bumper on, or raise up to 3". It rides better than xreas.

146 pounds, plus a winch if you do that. I figure I gained almost 200+ pounds. Actually makes the front end feel more solid. Not sure if that's from trying the front of the frame rails together better, or if that weight out there just makes it feel more solid.
