Can you identify this monster?

This thing was huge. First time I've seen it in my area. What is it? Eagle, vulture, hawk?

Hard to tell from such a low-quality image. But my guess would be either a black vulture or a large hawk. Google shows there are red-tailed hawks in your area, and some of those can be very dark. There's even a chance it could be a young bald eagle.

turkey vulture or bald eagle. probably too big for most hawks. if the underside of the wings is half black/half silver, it's a turkey vulture. from the picture, not much coloration visible on the underside, though. edit: if the bird is facing away from the camera, ie, we are looking at the top of its wings, this is a turkey vulture. head looks more like a vulture than an eagle, too.

it would. but the picture quality is terrible. i cannot tell if the head is feathered. i am also color-blind, so i'm out of luck as far as the poor quality photo showing the red head. plus, if the bird is facing away from the camera, the red is much less visible, as the whole head is not red, and the feathers go up to the base of the skull. immature turkey vultures have a dark-grey head.

another thing in favor of "vulture" is the finger-like wing tips.

with that coloration, it is a turkey vulture.

I'd say turkey vulture, too. At the very least, it's not a 'regular' vulture. The neck is standard hawk shape, not the long, gangly neck of a 'standard' vulture.

I agree with the vulture stance, and the 'finger' feathers. Also size: Google says that turkey vultures can have a 6 foot wingspan, so they are the size of bald/golden eagles.

yeah, the silver wings mean its probably a vulture. From a distance golden eagles and turkey vultures look similar- roughly the same wingspan, but the feathers on the underside of a vulture's wings are very noticeably silver/white. Check these for comparison:
