Canada Bug Shield Owners

all those that have the CAN bug shields.

i [edit] had my dealer [edit] install my shield on friday, but when i went to work this morning, i have this very very nasty buzzing vibrating harmonic at 50+ mph. i can actually see the center of the shield vibrating. i used the bumpers that came with the shield. the center bumper has a slight gap (1/8 inch tops) which is probably my culprit.

1. anyone else use the bumpers and not have this problem?

2. if you didnt use the bumpers at all, do you have any vibrating issues?

3. anyone know where i can get replacement bumpers?

4. other option is to find small rain drop bumper and place it on the bug shield opposite of the bumper on the hood to fill in the gap. can i get these at a walmart etc.?

The dealer installed the bug deflector on mine, and it does have the dome-shaped bumpers. I have not had an issue with vibration in the 4000 miles I have put on the rig. Was there an instruction sheet included?

after i went back to my post i noticed i left a part out, which is now annotated. i guess i could take it back to the dealer, but i dont see anything being done since the part is not even part of toyota usa part system. never know though. so ima go by and talk to the dealer that installed it and see what happens.

i would prefer to just rip the bumpers off and be done with it and let it hang freely like the usa spec bug shields, but i dont see that happening i think.

i was hoping someone with the CAN bug shield had left the bumpers off and what effect that did.

oh well, while let you know what comes of this.

The shield is resting on the bumpers. That's how my rig has been set up, therefore no shaking. Check to see that it's tight.

Sorry Man. I've not experienced any vibration but will take a real close look tomorrow just to make sure.

Dealer installed and bug shield is levitated using the plastic 'bumpers' or whatever the technical term is.

No problem at high speeds. I also have a slight gap, maybe 1/8 but more like 1/16". It has 3 little clear round bumpers with the center bumber being dead center of hood. The other 2 are just before the hood swoops down. I can't draw the lines, but bumbers are here:

In addition, there are plastic clips on front of deflector holding it about 1/2" off the hood.

I had the bug shield installed on my rig by the dealer here in Ottawa at time time of purchase and I too noticed the vibration starting at about 115 Km/h and would get worst as the speed increased. I like travelling at about 120 Km/h when I'm on the big highways so this problem bugged me from the beginning. I only realized that it was the bug deflector after driving into some very gusty head winds one day on the hyway. The vibration was coming and going as the wind gusted. That's when I noticed the trailing edge of the bug deflector vibrating. Up to this point I thought my problem was a more serious mechanical issue as noted in the problems area of this forum.

The small clear plastic/rubber center bumper on my rig is dead center on the hood and there is an approx 1/8 "gap between it and the deflector. I first tried putting a plastic spacer on top of the bumper to fill the gab so that the center of the deflector was resting on the spacer. I thought that would dampen the vibration. That did not work as the vibration was still happening. I then got some black plastic door edge stripping (used to protect the door edge from nicks and scratches) from the local Crappy Tire Store ( you could try Pep Boys I'm sure they would have this as well).

I slid it over the trailing edge of the bug deflector (it has an adhesive strip that will hold it in place). I put it on the leading edge as well (I got two pieces in the package, figured I might just as well use them both). They have been there all winter and they work great at any speed and do not detract from the great look of the 4Runner.

That's how I solved my vibration problem.

thanks for the info toy-man. i added a small bumper to the bug shield opposite of the center hood bumper, that pretty much solved 90% of my vibration. once in a while i get a odd vibration between the outer bumpers and center bumper, so i may have to add 2 more bumpers between the 3 original bumpers. up here, its always windy (montana blows and chicago sucks and ND gets stuck in the middle).

gonna try and live with what i have for now, but if it persists, i will add the 2 other bumpers, if i can find some clear bumpers tall enough.

Has anyone else had any luck solving the vibration problem? Mine also vibrates, so I went to Crappy Tire to look at the door edge protectors. The ones I saw were thin soft rubber with a sicky side on hold them on. They seemed way too soft to make any difference to anything. Maybe I'm mistaken. Anyone else try it?

I don't have any vibration and I have a heavy foot. Suggest taking it up with the stealer.

Those are the door edge protectors that I used. They are quite thin but do the trick. Mine is still working great.

Here's how I figure it: They stop the vibration by increasing the resonant frequency of the whole assembly. Since the frequency has changed. when the air wind flows over it, it doesn't vibrate. The vibration is caused by the bug guard vibrating much like a reed in a harmonica. That's my theory and I am stick'n to it!

I have had my 4Runner up to 160 KPH (100 MPH) to test this and still no vibration. (Handles great at that speed, by the way, but not recommended.

Sure hope it works as well for you folks.

I don't get it. Were these deflectors not installed properly or the bumpers not spaced or positioned properly?
I am thinking about getting one of these Canuck deflectors, but not if they don't work right.

I don't have any vibration up to 140km/h (didn't try faster ). May be because I went with an idea that Toy-Man gave as soon as I installed mine. I've done this mod to Bug Guards to all mine previous vehicles.

Canadian Bug Shield Mod

Here is a picture or two of my bug shield with the door edge stripping applied to the leading and trailing edge. A picture is worth a 1000 words, they say. Sorry I didn't have pictures earlier. This mod worked for me from the getgo.

Got another fix for this problem.

I asked the dealer for more bumpers, but they didn't have any...so they ordered some for me. They cost 7.50 after tax, but you get a lot more than you need. Anyway..I installed the kit myself, and I got vibrations at around 70mph. i installed two bumpers almost right at the top edge of the shield and it rest right on it. It feels really solid now...but I'm more self conscious about the black bumpers, since they are more visible than the clear.

But here are the pics to help orient you!

First, the part number is

Bumper Replacement Kit
PT427-35985-BK

You get 5, and Maybe you can ask them it they have clear ones as "BK" might mean 'black'.

I'm pretty sure the dark black below the sticker is the hole in my grill just to orient you, about where i originally had the clear bumper.
