Can’t decide 5th gen or used LC200

Hey guys

So I’m about to come off my lease for my 2015 Grand Cherokee 2.5”lift w/32s and I’m jumping head first into the Toyota world.

So I’ve been absolutely convinced about going for the T4r even though I’m sure a new body style will come out as soon as I buy, but whatever. I plan on keeping it for a while. I’ve been researching all kinds of lifts, and had it all planned out but then I just happen to meet this Ferrari mechanic in town who’s driving a 2016 with 2”lift with 35s. He cut the frame around body mount and they fit perfect, zero rub. So obviously it’s hard to ignore being able to run 35s on minimal lift!

But now...I starting thinking about getting a used Land Cruiser (if I’m able to find one.) obviously this is a 4Runner forum, but objectively what do think?

Use:
Daily driver
Tows trailer weekly
Only drives in town
Based on our lifestyle, I would need years vs miles in terms of life span. (Drive about 6k/year)

Thanks for any help

How heavy is the trailer?
How far do you tow it?

Do you want a V6 or V8?

If money was no concern hands down the Land Cruiser (200). They are designed, intended for, and overbuilt to last 25 years from the factory. But they are priced that way also. The 4Runner is an excellent platform, but for regular towing as intended the added power of the V8 in the LC200 would be a better option.

I was looking at the same thing. I went with a '17 4Runner TRD Off-road Premium with KDSS. It was less than 40k and I leased just to make sure the 6th gen isn't something I want more. I still spent 15-20k+ less than a nice used LC. Thats a lot of vacations, toys, dinners and so on.

The LC is amazing but the size difference isn't that big any more. Also the warranty was a big deal for me. Yes the LC is rock solid and will go go 300k+ miles but used is used. You never know. When it breaks and it will it will still be more expensive to fix than a 4Runner.

The biggest thing with the LC is the motor. Its a V8. The V6 is good, but if you tow it can be an issue.

How big is your trailer and how much do you use it?

All good points, and all ones that I’m chewing on.

I was looking at TRD off road but no kdss

Buying used is a tough pill to swallow since I’ve only ever leased. It would be a fist for me, but I figured since these cars seem to last forever (at least that’s what I read on th forum) I could continually upgrade it and keep it new/exciting

Trailer is small. I run a church so we bring in our equipment each week. It’s like 6x12 probably less than 2k lbs. so either truck would have no problem

At the end of the day, we’re talkkng daily driver with lift and tires. Kids coming in the future, but wife has a car

This is an easy one for me because I had the same question when buying my Sequoia and 4Runner. Clearly, I didn't choose the Land Cruiser. I just wanted new cars, not something used. Plus if you want a Land Cruiser just for the V8, I would take a look at the sequoia. A new one with the 5.7L and 4WD is still less than a 200 series that's a few years old. I tow with my sequoia all the time and the 4Runner makes an excellent daily driver. Well they both do, but the 4Runner is better on gas and easier to drive and park.

I just went through the same calculus and ended up purchasing a new 4runner. In part, it was because I did not want a used car right now. (As said above, used is used and you never know). And I didn't want to spend the time hunting down a good specimen. Second, I'm going to modify this vehicle and the after market support on the 4Runner seems to be much more extensive. Finally, I'm going to run this thing on trails and I'm moving into a 4Runner for greater agility and maneuverability. While the LC200 is a great platform, I was only able to find mixed feedback on its maneuverability in technical situations.

At the end of the day, you can't really go wrong with either. Flip a coin; you'll have your answer.

All great points. I think I’ll stick with the 4runner. I just built one on Toyota.com and it came out to $40,900 that’s pretty hard to beat.

I went down this, decision factor for me ended up being 1: overall size, 4Runner has better angles all around for the trails I'm on and 2: cost, saved 20k over going with a used land cruiser and that's allowed me flexibility in other areas of life. If I wasn't demanding the offroad angles, or had the money, it would be land cruiser easy. Especially if I was towing. There's plenty of lc200 aftermarket support in my opinion, we'll only see more as the cost of used ones comes down. You and your family's feeling behind the wheel of both should be the deciding factor though.

For your usage, seems like the 4runner is a no brainer. the interest rate alone on new verse used for vehicles at the same price would cost you thousands over the course of the term and at the end hte 4Runner would yield a higher resale.

Sounds like you made a good decision. You never said how much you were towing.

I regularly pull a trailer without an issue at all. The 4.0 6 cylinder is very capable as long as you're not hauling close to the max weight.

Great plan, and brand new come with the Toyota warranty...2,000 # trailer is nothing.
- even my wife's v6 RAV4 Limited with tow package, is rated at 3,500 #
But going new, order the factory tow package, with the coolers.

Resurrection!!

Hey guys, glad I found this thread...I'm looking at a similar "trade"...but a bit different than new vs used, used vs used.

I bought a 2013 5th Gen SR5 4Runner last year, cherry with only 38k..now that I'm a year and some nice upgrades into it at about 50k..I LOVE my truck, but I feel like something is missing. Maybe it's the V6, or just the utilitarian silver plasticy interior, which I don't really mind..but still, we've all heard the 5th Gen common complaints..no frills, rough ride, no rear lift gate (anymore), etc

This week I find a 2008 LC200, same magnet grey, same awesome LC interior on the new body style, shaped alot like my 4Runner really, with the sweet split rear gate, with 150k.

So here's the question, do you trade 5 years and 100k for $80k worth of used style comfort and that V8? ..or keep the 5th Gen so I can still wave at my T4R friends and not feel like a snot haha?
Assuming nothing else matters like towing etc.

the interest rate will cost you thousands? what the hell kind of rates are you getting? penfed has 3.49% vs 4.04%, on a $35k 5yr loan that's $500 (or about $8/month)

I thought we all just bought 4runners until we could find a used LC that we could afford?

Is that just me?

I'm 40 with a 2016 Trail. Plan is to drive the '16 until I'm about 60, then buy a LC and be buried in it :hatsoff: :rip:

I agree with this 100%.

If price is within budget and you plan to tow at all Id go for the 200. I have a 6x10 utility trailer. With my zero turn mower loaded it really drains the power of the v6. For offroading, a lot of ppl will say they prefer the smaller 4runner but if you pull up dimensions the 200 is not THAT much larger. A few inches longer and wider. Much more power. Just as capable.
