Can't decide on which year. Any advice on what I am not seeing?

I am wanting to get back into a 4R after my last one. A 2004 Sport 4WD V8. I should have never sold it as it was so nice.

I have at least decided on 06 or up. A lot more Limited's for sale it seems. I want a V8, 4WD, white or silver. I see there's not too much difference between the 06 to 07 models. I can find pretty decent one's around 90K for 17K on a Limited model around here. However, if I jump up to a 08 or 09 the prices really go up. Around 6 to 8 K from what I see. I realize it is 2 years newer, but wow!

Am I missing something that really stands out between the 07's to the 08 and 09's?

I have a 2013 Tacoma 4WD DC Sport that I am going to sell. Just not enjoying it as much as I thought.

I switched from a 2nd gen Taco to a 4th gen 4R (08) and haven't looked back. The taco is a great truck, but the 4R is much more refined and sophisticated engineering-wise.

I believe the 05 refresh was the biggest in terms of adding projector lamps (easy conversion to HID), slight body tweaks. If there isn't much difference between 06/07 to 08, I'd say go for the 06/07 as you get better value. If getting a newer truck enables you to get certified extended warranty from Toyota, that's worth it (I got an 08 because it came with a 5 year unlimited miles warranty).
 
06-09 is the refreshed years, projectors, different grill, changes in the body line, etc. 09's are a little harder to find, 06-07 are the best bet for styling improvements as well as lower prices
 
before I purchased my 07' Limited V6, I did quite a bit of research and there are only minor differences in the 06' to 09' models. Side curtain airbags were an option on the 07' and became standard on the 08' and 09'. I think the Nav system also became available in the 08' or 09' model if not mistaken.

Edmunds is a great place to research minor differences.

I found an 08' Limited V6 with 64,000 miles on it for $22K. A week later I purchased my 07' Limited V6 with 50,000 miles on it for $21K. Vehicles were identical except for model year.

The V6 has timing chain
The V8 has timing belt
 
I am torn between 2 different ones I have found.

2006 Limited V8 4WD 94K Miles. A few knicks and dings on the exterior. The interior has some scratches on the door panels, etc. No NAV. Asking price is $17,900.00.

2008 Limited V8 4WD 58K miles. I have not looked at this car personally as it is about 6 hours from me. The pictures show it being very pristine. Spoke to the seller and he said it is a cream puff. It is loaded with NAV. Asking price is $24,500.00

I have searched for a lot of models that are for sale. These 2 are about the closest to what I am looking for.

If I fly out and like it, buy it and drive it back would be great. If I fly out and don't like it I will very pissed!
 
I traded my 03 in on an 08 and am very happy with the upgrade, you're looking at the right years in my opinion. The biggest reason for difference in price is usually lower miles. My 08 only had 37K miles on it when I bought it.
 
$6600 price difference? Not worth it. Yes, it's got Nav and lower miles but an aftermarket deck with Nav may run you $1000.

I can tell you this. I have a white 07 and the white paint seems to oxidize easily. My paint is very dull, even after a wash and wax. A detail shop I visited mentioned that Toyota's white paint on 4Runners of my age usually all showed similar wear or oxidization. I believe you'll have less issues with silver.

Personally, I would probably go for the 08 because I am a sucker for low mileage. Also as others mentioned, the timing belt will likely need to be done on the 06. I would try to haggle them down on the 08. It is probably your safest bet and bang for your buck if you can get them down a couple thousand.
 
I'm on my way to see the 08. Hopefully I will be driving it home. If not I'll keep looking. Timing belts and such is not an issue for me as I am a Toyota and Lexus factory technician.
I am not too sure how much he will come down. I will try for sure. These are in such a high demand in the southeast it's crazy. I called on 4 of them over the weekend and they all sold before they were finished being detailed. All the decent private sellers all were sold as well.

Let us know how it goes. I think you made the right decision. I can feel it in my gut! lol
 
I pulled the trigger on the 08. I would grade the condition an B+ to an A-. It has a couple of very small scratches on the front and rear bumper, one little scratch near the glove box and just a couple of other very minor things. It does not have one door ding or scratch on the body. The white is of chalked a tad. Toyota used a single stage paint for the Super White. Why? I have no clue. You must keep up with the wax on it for sure.

I was able to get him down to $23,750.00. According to all the values I looked at and what was out their for sale, I feel that is very fair for both of us.

Drove it home which was a little over 400 miles and it did wonderful. No rattles, vibrations or driveshaft clunks! The tires on it are about 80% new. I can't recall exactly what they are, but it's not what I would have picked. Can't wait for them to wear out. I put a set of Michelin AT2 on my new Tacoma and they are freaking awesome. Highly suggest those tires.
 
Grats! Sounds like you made a good decision and got a pretty sweet ride for a good deal. Treat her right and she will last you a long time! :)
