So im doing a partial rebuild on a second hand 3vze motor. Doing head gaskets seals, water and oil pumps, timing belt. Didnt have a chance to hear the motor running prior to it being removed.
Is there a way to do a compression check with the motor not bolted to a gearbox?

if there isnt am i best to do rings and bearings while the block is bear?

I have a 10,000km trip coming in febuary dont wanna take the risk when im on the Nullabour plain.

Any help would be great

thanks

I suppose that you could put an impact gun on the crank bolt and do your test like that. However, you really need a leak down test to determine the health of your motor. Also, once you tear down the motor, you could check with a micrometer to see if the cylinders are within spec. Hell, if the motor's on a stand, and I were driving across the states and back, I would freshen the bottom end. Am guessing the Nullabour Plain doesn't have a good tow service.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. If the cylinders are working spec will just do rings and bottom end. Was counting on the compression test as a gauge but that's not possible.
May as well do it. Don't know wether I trust my spanner skills lol
We will be lucky to get mobile reception let alone a tow truck.

You should be able to do a compression test with the motor being on a stand as long as the block is assembled. Just turn the crank with a breaker bar or an impact gun.

With what you said you wanted to do to the motor "partial rebuild", I wouldn't touch the bottom end. You can't just simply replace the bearings and rings without machine work. At a minimum you would need your crank to be polished as long as it doesn't need to be ground down for over sized bearings. If there isn't any play in any of the rod bearings, and the cylinder walls look good, then I would leave the bottom end alone.

Do the head gasket, pumps and replace any seals and put her back together.

Just my .02

Yup. Thats what I was going to say.

I don't know about you guys but only having 1 bolt to block and the other to the flimsy piece of metal ( the other would normally bolt to the gearbox) is just asking to do damage to the flywheel and or starter motor. I'm a dodgey bas**** but that will end up costing me more than rings and bearings.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong
