Can't figure out how to get door link snap in place

I'm trying to get my door link snap clip back in place on the door handle and am having issues doing so, has anyone had any experiences getting it back in? As far as I can see, the only way to do so is to put the clip on the link and then shove the whole assembly back through the hole in the door handle but no matter how hard I shove it doesn't seem to want to go back in. I tried first putting the clip in the hole first and putting the link through after but then I can't get the bottom part of the clip to snap on to the link if I do it that way.

take the rod out, snap the clip in place, then put the rod in.

That's what I tried but when I put the clip in first and then tried to put the rod in it snapped, I'm thinking maybe Toyota gave me the wrong size.

it's possible it's the clip as there are so many of them. but it goes in that way; clip first then push rod through and clip it.
