Can't find tranmission fluid dipstick, pls help

Hi everyone. I just bought my first Toyota 4runner. Its a '97 v4 manual transmission, 2wd, with about 205k miles on it. I'm just getting to know the car and one of the first things I want to do is to check the transmission fluid. I know the dipstick should be located on the driver side near the power steering fluid and battery. However, there appears to be no dipstick on the car... all I saw was this red thing with a screw in it kind of at the bottom of the engine. Perhaps the dipstick used to be here? Is it supposed to look like this? What do you guys think??? I took a pic of it from looking down on it and from under the car.

Well, first off, It's on the passenger side of the engine... the power steering reservoir is also on the passenger side of the engine. It's the only dipstick over there, not sure how you can miss it. But hey! The battery is on the drivers side though!

Oops- i missed it. You have a 3rz. Tranny dipstick should still be very easy to find. Keep on lookin'. :cheers:

Also, while I was under the car I noticed this weird screw with a bunch of grease sticking out of this unit bolted onto the transmission. Is it supposed to look like this? Should I screw it in more? not sure what it does

I watched this video of a guy changing his tranny fluid on the same car and his dipstick was on the driver side. Can't find the thing anywhere, I know it should have a red handle. Don't know if the fact my car is a manual makes any difference. Owners manual doesn't reference the transmission fluid dipstick at all.

No transmission dipstick on my '99 5-speed V6 4x4. I would be surprised if they had them on the 4cyl. 2WD.

Fill level is to bottom of fill plug. You use a hand pump to fill until it starts to overflow. To check level, stick your finger in the fill plug. If you touch fluid, you're good.

Remember, when draining, always remove fill plug first.

MOST manuals do not have dipsticks. There are exceptions. Suburu Outbacks and Foresters have dipsticks on the manual as did my '73 Audi 100 LS way back when. I didn't smell troll, if he was, it was pretty weak.
