Can't get key fob program mode to work

I've got a 06 and a couple weeks ago my key fob stopped working. I replaced the battery with a couple different batteries and the fob never worked. So I then found the instructions on how to program a fob. My problem is I cannot get the truck to enter the new key fob mode. I've tried these instructions http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/51642-key-fob-programming.html#post421702 and these, even though I know they're not for my model. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/7501-programming-instructions-keyless-entry-remote.html#post60925

Anyone else have issues with getting this to work? I complete all the steps and the locks never lock/unlock to signal the truck is ready. Could there be a fuse or something that needs to be replaced? If so do you know which one it would be? Thanks for any help.

Do you have a way to test the transmitter? Some auto parts shops have a transmitter display to test amplitude of your fob's signal to see if it needs a new battery. Its not often, but those keyfobs can fail internally.

I'm not at work at the moment so I can't double check if '06+ have a different manual procedure... I'm a little spoiled because having the scantool to use so I'm a little lazy on remembering the manual methods. :behindsofa:

Hey all, i was gonna drop this in a new thread. i bought a replacement key fob off ebay and all the instructions i found here on yotatech didn't work for me. so the ebay seller sent me instructions on how to get it done and it was significantly different than what i found on here. Just wanted to get these instructions out there to help poor slobs like me. and when you program it , dont think about this too long, you have to scoot through the sequence at a pretty good pace.

1. Driver's door open, key removed from ignition switch.

Within 5 seconds:

2. Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch twice.

Within 40 seconds:

3.Close and open driver's door twice.

Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch.

Within 40 seconds:
4.Close and open driver's door twice.
5. Insert the key into the ignition switch and close the driver's door.
6. Switch ignition ON and OFF once to program a remote transmitter code while retaining the original codes or twice to program a remote transmitter code whilst erasing the original codes. Three times to check how many remote transmitters are currently registered or five times to erase all registered codes.

7.Remove key from ignition switch:

System should now lock and unlock vehicle once, twice or five times
depending which mode has been selected. One to four times, slowly, to
indicate number of remote transmitters registered.

Within 40 seconds:
8.Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 1.5 seconds

Within 3 seconds:
9.Press LOCK button.

System should now lock and unlock vehicle once to confirm registration,
twice to indicate registration has failed.

Within 40 seconds:
10.Repeat button procedure to program remaining remote transmitters.

SIDE NOTE: To exit programming mode: Open driver's door.

SIDE NOTE: A maximum of 4 remote transmitters can be programmed.

Hope this helps someone.

programming not working

Hey everyone....

Super frustrating: I followed the steps, and it locks/unlocks once that it has been successful.

Then I open door (which instructions say exit programming mode).

Then nothing. neither of the remotes are working, although they work great during programming?

Not sure if there's some kind of lockout feature?

I followed the instructions, to the letter, and even tried disconnecting the battery for 20 min.

Thing is, the remote worked fine until about two days ago. (but they still work during programming).

Any help is appreciated....

thanks much-CJ

I've tried everything

Hey all, new here.
I just picked up a 04 V6 and it came with 2 NOT programmed keys. I did not know how to enter programming mode and a friend of mine programs keys for a living so i went to him. Anyways he went through the whole process trying to get the 4runner into programming mode but it would not work.

Since then i have looked through every thread i could find and nothing has helped. I have tried disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes, I've checked most fuses in the truck and nothing is blown.

The only thing that is weird to me is that in all the videos i've watched on how to enter programming mode, all of the vehicles chime when the door is open and key is in where mine does not. Is there a fuse that detects whether or not the key is inserted?

Im out of ideas any advise is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If the key reminder isn't going off, your key detection switch may be worn?

I hate to awaken a long dead thread, but I don’t have enough replies to start a new one yet…

So having an issue with getting a 2004 Limited into programming mode. I’ve followed the directions, to the letter, tried various timings, over and over again. I can never seem to get the programming mode to start. It won’t cycle the locks, no matter how many different times I run through this song and dance… So the question is, is there anything the previous owner may have done that would cause this 4Runner to not go into programming mode?
Oh and the door open light cycles properly, and the key in ignition chime functions also.
Thanks in advanced, and again sorry for bringing back a dead thread.

So I went through this a little less than a year ago. When I got my 03 it didn’t come with any key fobs so I found some on Amazon and paired them with the truck however those worked for about a year and a half maybe 2 years. But AutoZone sells them as well for about $30 and I connected it and it works great. It may just be that your key fob (especially if they’re original or cheap Amazon aftermarket) may have finally just died. Sometimes the chips inside the fobs short they’re no longer good.

I have the same issue. My car has an aftermarket remote start on it. I go through all the steps but the locking sequence never happens.

Any advice?

Just wondering if you ever found a solution? I’ve been dealing with strange electrical issues for about a year and thought I had it all straightened out when randomly my key fobs stopped working. I’ve tried to enter the programming mode and same as you, the locks never cycle.
