Can't read the dipstick

Does anyone else have this problem? I can't read my oil dipstick. I've got a 2005 with the V-6, and the dipstick just doesn't come out "clean"...no matter how many times I wipe and dip, the oil sort of "crawls" up the dipstick and doesn't give a good level.

I do my own oil changes with Toyota filters and Mobil 1, so I know I'm putting in the correct amount of oil, but I'm about to take a 2,000 road trip and this is disconcerting....

Don't worry about how high the oil is on the sides of the dipstick, just look for the highest spot that it goes all the way across the dispstick to find your actual oil level.

Well, that's kindof my point. This dipstick does not have a normal "level" reading. It appears that when pulling out the dipstick, any normal level reading is smeared or distorted by the time it is pulled out.

I've been tempted to buy a new dipstick and try it, but is suspect it's something about the dipstick recepticle.

I was just curious if anyone else has experienced this with the V6.

Yes, it happens on mine, but I can still find the point where the oil goes all the way across the dipstick, not just up the sides. That's the true level mark. If it really bothers you, just wait a while until the oil drains completely and you should be able to get a perfectly "clean" reading on the dipstick.

As far as I know, the dipstick is probably the worst thing about the V6. It is notorious for being useless. There are countless posts about it with 2005+ Tacoma owners over on ToyotaNation. Some suggest drilling holes in it, similar to the windshield washer fluid one.

If you put 5.5 quarts of oil after an oil and filter change and there are no leaks, I wouldn't worry about it.

if you pull it out and there is oil on it, your fine. I do my own oil changes, so I know exactly how much I put in there. It doesn't burn any oil so, I'm good.

It is difficult to read and take out. Be sure to put a little oil around the o ring as it can get stuck in there.

I tend to check mine after sitting over night so there should be no extra oil in the tube.. messing up readings.
yes the dipstick is a horrible design.. just like the seats

I just did my first oil change (2010 highlander) where the dipstick was readable, and my second oil change on my 4Runner (4.0L) where I cannot read the dipstick as others have pointed out. I went with Uneek's advise:

If you put 5.5 quarts of oil after an oil and filter change and there are no leaks, I wouldn't worry about it.

I used a 5 quart jug and half of a 1 quart. Basing on how much oil came out (poured it back into the 5 quart bottle from the catch pan and it filled right to the top where a new container isn't filled to the top), I definitely got more than 5 quarts out so I put in the extra .5 as the maintenance manual says 5.5 quarts for a drain and refill with oil filter change.

I'm hoping that it's at the correct level since I can't tell from the dipstick at all.

I have the V8. And my dipstick has two notches. I assume that if the oil stops at the top notch, then it's full.

That's the correct way to check if you can read your dipstick, the top notch is the full line and shouldn't be above that. I'm having trouble like some other people where every reading is smeared way above the top and there's no real clear line across where the oil level is solid either to get a good reading from that.

Same problem here...most times it takes me a few (maybe a dozen or so) tries to find (and repeat to confirm) the level mark made by the oil after a change.

Yup, most worthless dipstick I have even seen. Useless. Well maybe not worthless, it does give one the impression that some unquantifiable volume of oil is present, nothing more specific than that.

Can’t reliably read dipstick on 2020.
Tempted to take a small file and scratch hatch marks between the two raised dots on the dipstick.
