I know the 4Runner and the FJ are different in a lot of ways, but i want to know is the 4runner pretty capable off roading compared to the FJ?

They are also the same in a lot of ways , although I have grown to really love the FJ , the 4R ( yes biased opinion ) is extremely capable off road in stock for with a nice set of AT tires . I've seen first hand a 4R (mine) go up a hill (basically loose pea gravel) with ATRAC that a friend from FJcruiser.com could not get up with his FJ with 33" tires and a rear locker.

The short WB and breakover angles , really give the FJ a advantage over the 4R .

I like the FJ but the 4R is better for everyday life for me at least

That's exactly how I eneded up with my T4R, no regrets I'd love a FJC if I was buying it to mod and not be my daily driver. The FJC oozes 'cool', the T4R lives by the 'speak softly and carry a big stick' philosophy. From a DD standpoint you'll grow to love the 4wd system due to the center diff. Being able to drive with the sure footedness of AWD in the rain etc is awesome.

You can't go wrong either way, FJC or T4R. With the T4Rs you can't go wrong with the V6 vs the V8 either. There's tons of threads on that.

It's pretty neat that the bottom line is you can't go wrong

Automatic 4WD FJ Cruisers have a part time 4WD system like the Tacoma, so it cannot be used on dry pavement. Manual 4WD FJ Cruisers have a full time 4WD system with selectable 4WD like the 4Runners.
