Car died and has a new battery

I wonder if I'm the only one that is super anal about this.
When I park/turn my 4runner off, I actually manually turn off the HVAC & Radio.

When I get back into my 4Runner, I will turn the key, but before cranking it over, I let the "Priming sound" happen and then turn it over before making sure it's idling fine and proceed to turn the HVAC & radio back on.

It's not relevant to the thread, but I absolutely hate getting into a vehicle, turning the key and being blasted by loud fans and speakers. Plus, while the engine turns over, it essentially momentarily kills the power to those accessories anyhow. I started doing it just to avoid some wear& tear on my power antenna, but it became a habit for all my vehicles now, lol.

Living somewhere with winter weather, I didn't wanna put my power antenna in a situation where it would try to rise through a ice and snow that may have accumulated on the hood overnight.

Anywho.. carry on with the thread. t'was Just a random thought as I read this.

Haha, I'm anal about this with the 4runner, I turn everything off before I turn the ignition off. With my Honda DD with remote start I keep the heat or A/C on depending on the time of year so it's comfy when I get in it but I always turn the radio & headlights off.

Haha, yeah. I was gonna buy her a starbucks giftcard and write a thank you note on it. leave it on her windshield. but in order to go to starbucks i need to fix the car first, so hopefully i can do that all tonight.

I am having the EXACT same issue. I had the battery load tested and it is fine. It is about 3 years old I think, Die hard gold from Sears. The starter is only about 2 months old as the old, and the alternator is original at 220k.

The alternator tested with meter is pulling 14v+ so it seems to be fine, and the batt on meter is pulling 13.5v+ with engine running and around 12.5v engine off.

I pulled off my connections and wire brushed them shiny and reinstalled. It worked great for a few weeks, but now it is back. I guess I need to check all the main grounds and peel back the insulation on the main cables.

There has been quite a slew of people lately who take out the Toyota starter that worked well for 15+ years and replace it with a cheap parts store one that dies in a month or so.

I would double check your power and ground wires. Both at the battery, body and frame. The extra voltage needed for the starter will make a ground fault show up where normal accessories won't. This might be why everything works until you try to start it.

Had a shoddy battery to body ground on my Tacoma and had similar symptoms. Would look fine and once I hit the starter everything would shut off.

apparently the guy at autozone never tightened the ground negative that well. my guess is that the only ground it was getting was from the truck itself. holy crap. anyway. what made me fear that something more serious was happening to my 4runner came out to be something just really stupid and now i feel dumb.

Glad to hear it was simple. I figured that was the issue when I first started reading..

Fun fact when everything shtuts off like that when you turn the key it's almost always a loose connection or bad connection.

If it's the starter or low volts the starter will click and the lights will only dim not shut off.

How are you stupid when the guy at Autozone made the mistake? Not your fault. Glad it was simple and easy and you're back on the road.

Now go get that girl a gift card or something nice to show that you appreciate her and pray she's single.

From my experience, it's not the line but who's giving it. If the person is at all interested, cheesy/corny lines work great. If not, you're going to crash and burn.

yep, i did this in my miata for a while. that power antenna would raise and lower itself so quickly you could see it go up and down as the car cranked. i eventually put an inline switch in my glovebox so it wouldn't go up when i was using bluetooth/aux. going to do something like that for my 4runner here pretty soon.
