Minivans are perfect for this. My wife's 2013 Sonata (120k miles) is being replaced with a Sienna when it dies.
Wish I could figure out how to upload a picture easier (how is that so hard in 2019?) but I just went and sat in mine. Probably 4+ inches from my knees to the dash. My rear facing seat must be small or something.

I'm 6' and I have a Recaro car seat (they are huge). My 4yr old has plenty of leg room.
2019 TRD Pro - car seats a nightmare!
We currently have the Nuna Pipa Lite infant seat behind the passenger seat and it’s doable but you sacrifice leg room up front. We are now looking for a convertible car seat and wanted to make sure it works behind the driver’s seat bc we’re planning baby #2 and know the infant seat doesn’t fit there. I tried 3 yesterday, the Clek Foonf, Britax Advocate, and the Nuna Rava. Only the Rava fit without having to move up the seat and the anti-rebound bar was about 2 inches away from the seat making it too dangerous to use. Right now we’re struggling to find a seat that will work. I’m seeing these posts from ppl with seats behind the driver and I’m curious which seats you fit there rear facing?

Diono Radian Rxt with this angle adjuster. I’m 5’10” but easily fit it rear facing behind the driver seat with this as it adjusts the angle but also lifts the top of the seat above the seat back of the front seats. Super secure with the 4runner’s latch system. I’ve used it in our outback before the 4runner (with my 7 year old daughter) then for 2 years with the 4runner until we flipped my son around to be forward facing.

Best thing with the Diono’s is how much room they leave forward facing and they work from 5-100lbs (Rear facing, convertible, booster).
Here is a pic I snapped today for another thread. We put the two next to each other (now that my kids are 4 and 7). We used to have the forward facing in the middle and rear facing on the end. I like the two here so an adult can more easily sit in the back seat (insert grandparent).

The car seat must be equipped with side protection - a special design that protects the child during a side impact. The larger the sidewall and headrest area, the better.

I got you beat at 4'13" I have a lot of extra room in the back to bring along a mistress with my 2 kids and their big boy car seats. Wife wanted the third row but I had to have a ORP or a PRO.

You must just have a super slim rear-facing seat or it's not properly installed? I am 6' and my kid's rear-facing seat goes on the passenger side because otherwise I have to sit uncomfortably upright and/or close to the steering wheel. My wife is 5'9" and she's comfortable in the passenger seat with the car seat behind it, but like, barely. If she drives and I ride shotgun, my knees touch the glove-box. Our Graco car seats are pretty bulky I suppose but also pretty standard as far as car seats go...
Or maybe you just have a giant torso and short legs?
We also have Graco seats. They are also located on the passenger side in both of our vehicles. But even if I ride shotgun, there is still plenty of space (we now have moved to front facing so not really an issue anyway).
I actually took a picture when I first posted that message to show how much room I still had in front of my knees. Probably at least 3-4 inches in the picture. But I can't figure out how to post pictures to this site and frankly don't care to learn at the moment.
I do have a longer torso but still wear a 36-38" inseam depending on the style of pants so it's not like my legs are short. I continue to be boggled by the struggle of "tall" people to fit in this vehicle. I guess I'm happy that I fit just fine.

Fascinating. Maybe your femurs are short? Or maybe mine are long?? Haha. I dunno, I am 6 feet and 33" pants and if I sit shotgun and move the seat back as far as I can without contacting the car seat, I am uncomfortably close to the dash AND uncomfortably upright - I'd say at best I have an inch if I am trying to avoid putting my knees on the dash. Maybe I just have a sloppy slouchy posture.
Either way I rarely ride shotgun and the kiddo turns 2 next week so the fuse on the rear-facing car seat is getting shorter (until the next kiddo arrives anyway), so it's not like I have any real complaints.
