Most modern vehicles have the fuel pump submerged in the fuel tank. Running low or out of gas is hard on the pump. Squeezing out a couple more miles out of the tank of gas can get very expensive when the fuel pump has to be replaced.

Similar Issue with gas

I bought my 06 runner 125k about 1 month ago and it has been running fine since. about 1 week ago I got in it and it cranked but would not start. Battery is fine, and dealership said fuel system was functioning. The dealership mentioned it may be the computer, but I am skeptical as they seemed quick to jump to this costly option. Any suggestions of possible simple problems that could be causing this?

I say start with the basics as they did here, I added a couple I've come across from other threads

-Check if you have gas
-Fuses & relays (many have had issues with EFI fuse under the hood blowing out)
-Disconnect the battery
-Loose connections
-Make sure you don't have water coming in by the ECU, because i had a lot of it pooled from rain last week and might have damaged my ECU. I'm currently without my runner as well and having the dealer diagnose the ECU

Dealer called today and stated its the ECU, I have no way to know if this is true or not.

I made them give me a printout of the codes it was throwing

P0102 mass air flow circuit low
P0117 Engine coolant temperature circuit input low
P0122 throttle pedal position sensor switch A circuit low input
P0222 throttle pedal position sensor switch B circuit low input
P0345 camshaft position sensor A
P0452 Evaporative emission control system pressure sensor switch low input
P0712 Transmission fluid temperature sensor A circuit low input
P2135 Throttle pedal position sensor switch A/ B voltage correlation
P2138 Throttle pedal position sensor switch D/ F voltage correlation
P2742 Transmission fluid temperature sensor B low

J053619 I have tried everything on the list, but I didn't specifically ask about EFI fuse when I talked to the Toyota mechanic I will do this thank you.

I am worried that something else is causing this, I don't want to replaced the computer if I don't have to, but then again all the low voltages make sense to me with a bad computer. Any suggestions before I replace the ECU for a cool 1500?


UPDATE:
I ended up getting the ECU and battery replaced by toyota. It took a while as toyota engineers required my local dealer to run many different diagnostic tests before releasing the part (or so I was told). So far about 1 month out and things seem to be working well, the new ECU has a 1 year warranty on it.
