Cargo area roof hook? (Fishing Rod Holder)

Hey folks. Trying to quickly rig a makeshift fishing rod holder (similar to this Boat Buckle® RodBunk Deluxe Rod Carrier : Cabela's) before I head out this weekend. Purchased some rope from walmart and quickly strung up two "rope shelves" on the handles in the front and middle row. Ran into my problem when I get to the third and final "rope shelf". The "handle" (hardly a handle more like a hook) in the third row won't hold my rope so I can string it across the roof.

Two questions:

1) What the heck is that for? It comes somewhat unclipped and there's a bolt underneath.

2) Any solutions to help get around this problem, I sat in the trunk of my truck for 30 minutes trying to figure out a solution and came up with nothing.

I believe I've seen people put a D-Ring in place of the hook, which would work for your case.

Unbolt the hook and bring it to HD and find a D-ring with a bolt hole the saae size.

I unbolted the hooks and ran the bolt through a climber's daisy chain in the back and then just zip tied one between the 2nd row grab handles. Works perfect and keeps the poles separated

Thanks a ton for the great advice. Went to HD right after I saw your post, bough a couple D-rings and rigged it up beautifully.

My Mod...

Just what I did. Super useful. I used to have the rope shelf setup. Then I got a ceiling cargo net from Santa. The rods sit on top of the cargo net just fine too. I just make sure to hook any lures on one of the top rod guides so that I don't wind up pulling two trebles out of the cargo net for a few hours. I guess the hook keeper would be even better since it's down by the handle and wouldn't even have to cross over the top of the cargo net. But I got used to not using the hook keepers after forgetting and sticking myself a few too many times.

I like the clean look of the Toyota part above but they are $17 bucks ea. Thinking this might be a more economical option that maintains the OEM hook.

Brother, I am sorry. It was so long ago I don't remember. I did do a write-up on the mod for Trail4R.com. I think all the specs are in that piece. I believe the thread size (diameter) is MI9 or something like that. Length is up to you based on how you want it to seat.
