Cargo Boxes

Hey guys.

I know a lot of you have built your own cargo boxes over the years. That's totally cool, but I think it's a little overboard for what I want to have.

Does anyone have a cargo box that you can purchase for the cargo area? My cargo panel is full of stuff and so is my jack area under the seat.

I have a lot of stuff back there. Aside from the huge amount of stuff in my tool box which already has all of the wrenches, sockets, pliers, crimpers, electrical connectors, cutters, etc..., I keep lights, shackles, air compressor, jumper cables, batteries, epoxy/super glue, razor blades, duct tape, electrical tape, silicone lubricant, PB blaster, power inverter, extra center caps (yes, I keep extras lol), clothes, TP, water bottles, zip ties, towels, bulbs, and a bunch of other stuff. I wanna pick up some tow straps and another set of ratchet straps and bungee cords, too.

I am not really interested in obliterating my cargo space and I want one that will be easily moved and easily covered with my cargo cover I recently installed (new cargo panels, brackets, cover as mine came with no cover).

Hopefully one specifically off road oriented, not just some rubbermaid tub or something that will break on the trail. I want to strap it down to the tie down D rings. Something with a lock and key.

Anyone have anything along these lines? I've googled and I can't quite find what I am looking for... must be that I am not using the correct search terms. I really like the one that they made on top4runners that goes over the wheel well and stays out of the way, and still fits under the cargo cover. If I only had skill with woodworking.

Thanks, all help is always appreciated! All of the ones I keep finding fill the whole cargo area and are typically made for guns, so that means $$$$$$

If you don't like the idea of basic plastic bins, me either (they break and upon the unthinkable they would not keep your stuff from becoming projectiles). How about a basic tool box, tool bag or pelican cases?

When I built mine I needed it to withstand the unthinkable. It is built with steel reinforcements at the tiedown points. I also needed to be able to sleep on it.

I was looking at those Pelican cases, wow, they're pretty high tech for a box! Not quite what I am searching for.

Tuffy security products makes some awesome ones, but they're pretty big. I kind of want a narrow one that I can align front to back rather than side to side. Oh, and hopefully one that doesn't cost $700! lol

I love this one but it's just way out of budget at $700.

This looks practically perfect, just a small and long sliding drawer (though a little deeper would be nicer for the air compressor and extra space), metal and tough. Seems it's made strictly for Jeeps though, it's got angles and stuff to make it fit.

I didn't look completely through this website but you may be able to find something here that might work. Seems like they have all kinds of different lockers.

Tons of stuff on that site. Unfortunately, browsing each category didn't help much. Thanks, though.

Thinking about this one:

Compact Security Lockbox for any vehicle with sufficient space

But I can't find any photos of it installed in anything. It looks like it would be a little small, but if it fits between the hatch door and the wheel well then I would consider buying two, one for either side.

They have another box that looks perfect, but they dont have dimensions and want a minimum order of 5!

I plan on building my own sleeping platform and drawers in the near future but I have grown to like my Rubbermaid Action Packers in the meantime. They are cheap, durable, come in a few different sizes, and they have tie down holes. There is a company now that even makes fancy aluminum locking brackets to hold them in your rig. I just saw a "mod" on Expo that enables you to make the Action Packers waterproof and dustproof!

These are some Sweet setups, We will post our Cargo setup this week, we have custom built a cargo area for our 4Runner we are driving down to Argentina from Seattle. I will keep you posted on where the article is.

I was in your exact position and decided on one of these. Picked it up second hand on craigs for about $100. Best i can tell it meets all your criteria. Ill work on gettin a couple pics off my ipod for you.

SUV Cargo Caddy by EPI

this one is branded under a different name but almost identicle. you might try to google suv cargo caddy/box and switch to images, pretty quick way to hyperscan results. anyways here is mine, lmk if any ?:

Looks awesome. I do need to fit my subs back there though, do you have enough room with that?

If not, I might just consider looking second hand like you did. I didn't quite think of that one. Thank you for the idea.

Maybe I'll just get my ass to Colorado and pay Mr. Glen Yoshida a visit... lol :P

yeah no way on the subs unfortunately. theres about 10" between the box and the back seats and maybe 10" or so on top of the box to the cargo cover (to remain covered and out of sight). there is however room for the jl stealthbox. you cant really see cuz the shadow but i have one installed there. funny enough, got that second hand also for $90 in your back yard (san berdo) seemed too good to be true, i paid a friend of a friend $100 to drive out from LBC to pick it up and ship it to me, so a steal for under $200.

so the subs not perfect, the box aint perfect, but for the money i spent, my lack of skills and the fact that me and glenn arent best buds, im pretty happy. its all about the compromises i guess.

Bummer... if only it was half as deep, I'd be ordering one right now.

Thanks for your input man, I do appreciate the effort you've put into your post to answer my question. I'm gonna peek into the classifieds right now and see what I can find. I am fine with changing boxes if I have to, I don't really like mine. It was a cheapo premade Q-Logic box. Bought the cheapo subs, amps, and box all together for only $150. It wont be the end of the world if I got rid of it :P

EDIT: LOLOL speak of the devil!!

oh snap bro, thats crazy! jump on it man! thats awesome. hey no sweat on the info i gave you. ive received so much from this community that its a rare and welcome opportunity to be able to give something back. esp to a seasoned member like yourself.

so if you get this (how could you not, if only to get you by temporarily) be on the lookout for a jl stealthbox. it took me a few months of checking craigs several times daily but finally found one. in hindsight i probably could have used the time i spent to take a second job and pay for it twice but wth, i was on the clock anyways :)

the jl, yes, overpriced retail, does sound amazing for what it is. i had a bigger 12" kicker sub in a decent box and they sound about the same. if you are coming from a run of the mill sub system you might not be disappointed, i just assumed when you said "subs" you had multiple and or high end.

let us know if you score that box. and fwiw i used a piece of ply covered with canvas on top of th box in the shape of the cargo area to give a bigger double decker platform. i have eye bolts screwed into the box corners with mini camper tiedowns as well as ratcheting straps over the top to secure it.

let us know!

I would not discount the "Action Packer" from Rubbermaid.

Lockable handles, very heavy duty.

rubbermaid-actionpacker.jpg

Several different sizes available, the largest being something like $100 but still very nice and heavy duty.

The pelican cases are the best I've ever come across. They are military grade and so far the only people I have seen with a Pelican case are military. You can buy them but they are very pricey. It is much cheaper to have the govt buy them :)

What I need for my truck is something removable like the previous post.

it seems like all of you have gone with a rear cargo box to hold all of your supplies. mine is actually in the passenger seat. i call it, "maddie." unfortunately only one was made and while it will hold quite a few things, it is easily over stuffed and can drop everything. when i absolutely HAVE to carry more items i'll bring out the other cargo carriers i have – "jake" and "isa" – and throw them in the back seat area. they don't hold too much but i rarely need to haul much of anything anyway. i guess i got lucky with these though, they were all free (aside from the occasional ice cream or dog treat).
