Get the earlier (1996-2000) Cargo Shade...
The 1996-2000 Cargo Shade is superior to the 2001-2002 Shade. If you have the receiving brackets (round on bottom) for the 2001-2002 shade remove them and buy square mounts. The earlier cargo cover is much better than the later version.

A cargo shade is one of the few items that didn't come with my 4Runner. The cargo shades came with square mounting brackets from 1996-2000 and round brackets (like a half circle on the bottom) in 2001-2002. I have the round bracket receivers so several weeks after I bought my 4Runner I started looking for a tan factory cargo shade.
It seems like 99% of the cargo shades for sale have the square brackets. After searching for several months (mostly on eBay) I finally found one with round brackets. If you are buying a cargo shade make sure you ask if it is gray or tan. I have learned that you can't tell by the photos. Anyway, I got it delivered for $140 about a week ago. Read below for the reason why you shouldn't buy the 2001-2002 version.
Above you can see the photos of it installed. It was in like new condition, but my frustration was that the 2001-2002 cargo shade (with the rounded mounts) does not come with the extensions that connect to the head rests. Why would they change this part of the design? With the head rest flaps you cannot see anything in the cargo area. Without the flaps you can easily see what is under the cargo cover without really trying. Another part of the cargo shade that changed for 2001-2002 was the grab handle was deleted.
Below is a photo of the 1996-2000 cargo shade from.the 1997 4Runner that I sold. I don't want to mess with it now, but at some point I will sell my 2001-2002 cargo shade and buy the 1996-2000 shade. I will have to buy the square mount receivers, but they are readily available on eBay. If you own a 2001-2002 don't make the same mistake I did. Change your brackets to the 1996-2000 version and buy the earlier shade with the much superior design.

Can you also buy the mounting brackets or get them from a junkyard and switch them out? That would let the covers work between years

Bumping this. I live in San Francisco and we have been having a major problem with car break ins here. Time for me to get a cargo cover to protect my tools. Why limit yourself with just a 99' their all the same except for the ends, which can be found most any PAP yard or new.

Incorrect fitment information on this page
It seems like there are a lot of incorrect people here including senior members who are claiming that the 96 through 2002 covers are different and they will not work they are wrong 100%!! all covers from 96 through 02 regardless of round bottom corners or Square bottom corners fit perfectly we are a shop specializing in 3rd gen 4Runners only if you have been doing so for 20 years I can tell you because we have handled hundreds of these trucks the covers are all the same as far as fitment just because the cleat has a round bottom does not mean that the square bottom does not fit I have photos to prove so!! if you do not know what you're talkin about don't go on the Internet Posting information that is incorrect!! especially if you think you're a senior member of this page that just shows your ignorance don't comment unless you positively know what you're talkin about and have experience with it!! The round bottom style is the cheapest tile that was installed by dealers as an option however those cleats still fit the standard OEM style which has the square bottom that is the difference. Maybe if more people spent time to do the research then comment on things they don't know about. So in closing all 96 through 2002 covers regardless of what they look like will fit your truck if you have cleats installed in the truck doesn't matter what the cleats look like if they have a round bottom or a square bottom.... the round bottom or Square bottom will fit either one vice versa doesn't have to be the same these are identical tab mounts... I don't know how much clearer we can be about that.

Just to let you know you are incorrect 96 through 2002 regardless of round bottom or Square bottom are all the same your information is incorrect the cleat itself is the same regardless of how the bottom section looks they will both fit either or does not matter I've been doing this for 20 years and I can assure you that it does not matter of the bottom is round or Square they're all the same cleat the difference is the round bottoms were supplied by dealers and are an aftermarket option they are not the original OEM style found in all other forerunners the square bottom is OEM from Toyota factory either way the cleat itself will accommodate the round bottom or the square doesn't matter whether you're clean is round or Square it is all the same fitment just to let you know you are incorrect 96 through 2002 regardless of round bottom or square bottom are all the same your information is incorrect the cleat itself is the same regardless of how the bottom section looks they will both bit either or does not matter I've been doing this for 20 years and I can assure you that it does not matter of the bottom is round or square they're all the same cleat the difference is the round bottoms were supplied by dealers and are an aftermarket option they are not the original OEM style found in all other for runners the square bottom is OEM from Toyota Factory either way the clean itself will accommodate the round bottom or the square doesn't matter either you're clean is round or square it is all the same fit meant please be sure the information that you're posting in the futureWill not work. Covers for '01-'02 4Runners have the bottom corners rounded off. '00 and older 4Runner covers are completely square on all 4 corners. You need a cover w/ square ends.

Also gray covers are made for 2000 year models there for gray interior cloth blue gray sr5 models with sport hoods and fender flares hope that helps saw it mentioned somebody was looking for grey I have a grayish blue one in my sr5 sport
