Cargo Falling out prevention?

Hello Gang,
I have ran into a problem in which I'm hoping someone has solved. When I open the rear hatch, items fall out and hit the ground. I have broken a bottle of 25 year old scotch this way!
I have looked into the envelope nets and have read that they don't prevent this. Is there a solution that can be installed to prevent this from happening? I hate to abuse any additional bottles!

I'm sorry for your loss! I would have ran for a straw!

Scotch goes on the passenger floor. The envelope nets have pretty good reviews on Amazon. If you were really worried you could pin or Velcro it in the center.
 
You put about three 12's of beer in first and then the bottles in front of that.

Believe me Chief, you're not the first.
 
I kept my cargo net from my Matrix that I traded in and it seems to work fine (attaches at 4 points instead of two and keeps the struggle from being real for me)
 
My 4th gen has the cargo shelf option, which adds a small ramp to accelerate things launching out of the trunk. One of these days I'll build a filler that covers the ramp and adds a slight lip to hold things in.

Get the cargo net then run a bungie cord through the bottom of the net hooking it to the two bottom anchor points. Takes care of about 95% of the roll outs.

Does anyone have one of the rear Weathertech mats? I'd be curious to know if it has a fluid capture lip that might be high enough to stop roll outs.

I have one for my 4th gen and it has the lip. It definitely helps and I've had a lot less stuff shift towards the hatch because of it.
 
I got a cargo net from my Wife's first Rav4, and it attaches to the top net hooks. Then I use a bungee cord threaded through the bottom of the net and it is attached to both cargo rings.

works perfectly, easy to lay it down or move it out of the way, and I always have a bungee handy if I need one.

After additional thought, this looks like the right approach. This allows for quick removal if I were to haul something large. I have a color coordinated bungie cord ready to go so I'll go order a pocket next to go with.
I do not promote the abuse of alcohol when testing this solution... :drum:
 
I have struggled with this as well, best thing I have found that works is a cargo net which i wrap over my storage bin (this is where the scotch is) then I anchor the cargo net to the four mounting points in back cargo area.

I like the bungee chord idea through the bottom of the cargo net idea as well.

Good luck! Let us know if you come up with a better solution.
 
I use the cargo net that stretches across the back, and it has an envelope type pouch built in that goes across the entire length, which is good for holding small items in place. But, the best solution I have found is if I even think the cargo has shifted, and might fall out when the hatch is lifted, I use the remote to open the rear window first. this way I can check on the cargo, and re-position it before opening the entire hatch.
 
I'm still curious as to why the 4Runner is prone to this. I rarely had anything fall out the back of my Isuzu Troopers, but I don't really see much difference in the way the cargo area is configured.

I have the rear cargo shelf option on my '03, and it creates a small down slope ramp between it and the bottom of the hatch. This will cause smaller items to rest against the bottom of the hatch until you open it, then gravity takes over. If you also have the shelf option, that could be adding to your issue.
 
I have a Weathertech rear mat that has about a 2" lip on it. It's not all that sturdy but I've never had anything roll out.

Prolly should switch to Scotch that comes in square bottles.

This is a follow-up post. I purchased an after market net from Amazon and installed it in. Like noted earlier, it allows for items to easily roll out from under it. As recommended, I intertwined a bungie cord their the bottom and hooked the ends to the existing cargo D rings. The result is that it keeps things from rolling out!
FYI - I have a cargo mat installed in my 2016. Due to the side lips it raises the bungie about an inch to create a gap. This doesn't bother me but for others you may need to cut a notch into the mat to have the net firm against the floor.
