If I'm thinking correctly, for my Trail with sliding tray, I could remove the tray and mounting bracket (leaving some metal and stuff exposed in a few places) and place the Husky (or WeatherTech) mat in the rear and have everything covered (like the second picture above) - right?

I think I'm going to move forward with doing Harper7's mod and just remove the sliding cargo tray as a whole. Then I'll add a little sound deadening and slap the Husky back in...although I may strongly consider just getting a mat made for Runners without the tray...

Has anyone done this? Will the standard "non-tray" Husky or Weathertek fit in a "tray-removed" 4R? I decided that I definitely don't want the sliding cargo deck, but there are some good deals on units so equipped. If I can disguise the fact that the sliding deck was ever there, I'm tempted...

The third pic that TOYSTORY posted is the Husky mat for the trucks with sliding rear cargo tray. I have it. There are a few problems with it and I would not recommend it if these things bother you:
1. You cannot access the long skinny compartment from the rear gate of the vehicle very easily because the mat covers it. Note: you CAN still use the sliding cargo tray just fine as long as you don't have too much weight sitting right on the part that is right under the second row seat backs.
2. If you did not remove the sliding cargo tray stopper/flip-up barrier, then the mat doesn't really fit nice and smooth over it. I removed my barrier, so it is now smooth. The pic that was posted appears to be the mat over top of the stopper, and you can see how it is a linear lump right there.
3. It is somewhat slippery for doggies.
4. It covers up the cargo area tie downs closer to the front of the vehicle (unlike the 3rd row seat Husky, which appears to have slots for that).

I am thinking of just covering the carpeted area only with some softer rubber, like the kind from HD mentioned above, but this kind of bothers me too because then you don't have as much coverage...I guess with the sliding cargo tray, there is just not a real clear solution yet as far as I can see, but this Husky will do for now! Hope that helps people.

Would add only one thing to the needs-improvement list. The tray liner leaves a line on the inside of your tailgate where it contacts and rubs. My interior is black, so its probably more noticable than a lighter color.

Also agree that the front and rear mats are awesome.

All I did was take the sliding tray carpet mat and flip it over. It has a rubber type backing and nothing heavy slides around. I realize that not all 4R's may come with this extra mat, but it has worked for me.

I do the same for the 5th Gen, and also flipped over the carpet mat on our double deck style 4th Gen. We just take a couple old sheets and cover the back of the 2nd row seats and the cargo area to catch the dog hair and keep things dry on grocery trips (such as the milk cartons that sweat).

It takes no more than a minute to set up and works perfect. No slipping for the pooch, no access issues for the "secret" compartment, no plastic mat rubbing anywhere, and when you're done you just roll up the sheets and shake them out in the yard to keep the dog hair outside your rig.

Good point eddie. As a serious dog lover I was really trying to address that issue, and at least we wouldn't use the slider for the pets. Speaking of which oddly enough we don't really use it much anytime.

I can count the number of times we have used the slider on both hands. It's like a obscure tool. Seldom do you use it but when you do it's great. When we do use it we use it as a table while tailgating or a portable workbench when doing tasks far from home. My dog stays in the back seat so I have no problems there. If I get another 4Runner and the sliding tray is offered I will get it again. [MENTION=85512]eddiebx[/MENTION] I have hauled heavy flat stones and it has mashed the lip down on the liner. It eventually just springs back. It has a way better memory than me.

I just looked at my sliding tray with the possible idea of buying the Toyota OEM all weather cover jcox posted a picture of (thank you). I noticed one thing, and also had a question.

1. On my rig there is a plastic cover about 1.5 X 5 inches covering the area below where the lever slides back and forth. It's buggered up with a couple areas where the plastic is torn somewhat (discovered the day after I picked up the vehicle).

Was that supposed to be removed?

2. mform wrote about the liner rubbing against the wheels wells, which would be a concern. However I think he or she was talking about the Husky liner rubbing? On the all OEM weather cover can jcox, or anyone else who has it, let us know if it rubs anywhere?

The OEM liner does not rub as it is the same size as the tray.
I think I had that plastic under the latch on there when I picked it up. I removed it as I figured it was just like a "screen protector" keeping the plastic underneath from getting scratched until the vehicle was purchased.

The OEM liner is basically just like a tray condom, it fits exactly around the edges, so there's really nothing for it to rub up against. It does overhang down past the edge a bit and tucks into the gap between the tray and the wheel well, but it certainly does not get caught on there. That clear sticker is just a protective sheet to prevent scratches before the owner takes delivery I think. Not sure why that matters when the rest of the interior panels scratch so easily, lol.

Yep. Now I just put whatever I am hauling (luggage, bags of stone, rocks, my bike) in there and slide it over the lip. So far it has been plenty robust and I treat that back lip like it was not even there. I loaded a box in there and had to "walk" it over that back lip but it fit fine and the mashed lip came right back to original form.

Not exactly sure what you are asking, but here are pix with the liner installed and the secret compartment. If you look very carefully you see that tiny little bump at the edge of the compartment and the end of the tray? That's the lip I'm talking about.



This is with the door open, the liner doesn't really get in the way of anything IMO??



PLEASE don't make fun of me for having the carpet mat on top of the liner, I like to protect while I protect. Actually, I just keep it there because if I put it anywhere else it would be lost. I have my carpet floor mats on top of my Weathertechs too! LOL :tape:
